The Girl in the Glass
by
Susan Meissner

The Girl in the Glass is the second novel by Susan Meissner I have had the privilege to read. The first story I read by Susan Meissner is A Sound Among the Trees and from the start I was hooked on Susan Meissner's style of writing. I find her writing style unique. In The Girl in the Glass her unique style really made this novel very deep. The prologue introduces Nora Orsini from Florence, Italy in October of 1592. As you enter the first chapter, it is now in San Diego California where Meg is imagining Florence Italy, a place she has never been but is waiting for her Father to take her. Meg's Nonna (Grandma) wanted to take her but she died before she and Meg could go but Meg imagines the Florence, Italy that Nonna describes. In between each chapter we learn more about Nora Orsini's life, family, and Florence in 1500's. Nora is a descendant of the Medici Family. A very wealthy, influential family that had been part of great artists like Michelangelo and DaVinci. Susan Meissner tells a few stories in this one book: Nora's, Meg's, and Sophia's. The stories are beautifully haunting and in some cases heartbreaking. I was drawn into this story from the beginning and completely enjoyed it. Susan Meissner writes with authority about Italy now and going all the way back to the 1500's, Italian Artist and their art, writing books, and publishing books. I loved all of the characters in this story, felt a kinship with Meg and Sophia. These two women really left a lasting impression. The story lines are wonderful and the descriptions of Florence Italy Susan Meissner writes makes me want to visit Italy even more. I truly felt like I was seeing Italy and the art through Meg and Sophia's eyes. I highly recommend this story to those who enjoy historical fiction, it will not disappoint! I look forward to reading more from Susan Meissner.

The Secret Keeper: A Novel of Kateryn Parr
by
Sandra Byrd

, June 04, 2012
The Secret Keeper by Sandra Byrd is the second novel about The Court of Henry VIII, this time focusing on Queen Kateryn. I had the pleasure of reading To Die For first and The Secret Keeper is just as awesome. Sandra Byrd's novels are the first ones I have read about this time period. As a fan of Historical Fiction, when I read the description about The Secret Keeper, I knew I wanted to read it but wanted to read To Die For first. Sandra Byrd writes with much authority about this time period, the history surrounding this time, the ways of the courts, the laws and really all things to do with the setting of this book. I didn't have a lot of knowledge of this time period and I learned a lot. The Secret Keeper is its own book. There are some references to some details read in To Die For but Sandra Byrd makes sure that the readers do not feel like they have missed anything and makes sure that readers who read To Die For are not bogged down with details. The Secret Keepers moves at a good pace. It keeps you interested from start to finish. I really had a hard time putting it down. Sandra Byrd writes a beautifully descriptive story of Kateryn Parr and King Henry's Court that you feel like you are right there experiencing the whole thing. The Secret Keeper has a little bit of everything: love, betrayal, suspense, and action. The Secret Keeper centers around the religious struggles and laws of the time. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Historical Fiction, especially during Henry VIII's Court. You will not be disappointed. I look forward to reading whatever Sandra Byrd has coming next! I received this book from Howard Publishing for no charge in exchange for my honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Uncommon Grace

Serena B. Miller

Uncommon Grace is the first book by Serena Miller I have read and I truly enjoyed this book. I am a huge fan of Amish Fiction and this book did not disappoint. Uncommon Grace is about an Amish family who's father(stepfather) is murdered and mother is pregnant and has been shot by the man who killer her husband. Her son goes to the neighbors who are Englishers for help. Grace, a nurse practitioner home from Afghanistan where she served for quite a few years. Grace helps Levi and his family. The more Grace helps the more her and Levi are put together. I truly enjoyed this story. I had a very hard time putting it down because once I started it, it held my interest until the very end. As I have stated prior, I am a huge fan of Amish Fiction and in this book I learned more about the Amish Faith that I did not before. I did not realize the different orders of Amish except for Old Order. In this book Serena Miller talks about The Swartzentruber Amish, which seems to be a very strict part of the Amish faith with many more restrictions like how much each family can earn and the types of work they can do. I had never heard of this so it was very interesting to get insight into this faith. The characters both Amish and English were real people, they had their struggles and their lives weren't perfect. I really related to them. Serena Miller's descriptions of Holmes County, the people, and the surroundings are just awesome. I could picture all of it as I read. Uncommon Grace is Amish Fiction with suspense, romance, and faith. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction. I am excited to read more from Serena Miller in the future. I received this e-book from Howard Books/Simon and Schuster,INC through NetGalley.com for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this e-book.

Eyes of Justice

Eyes of Justice is the fourth book in the Triple Threat Series by Lis Wiehl and April Henry. I have had the privilege to read all four of these books in this series and Eyes of Justice DOES NOT disappoint. I could NOT put this book down, found myself up late to read just one more chapter. In Eyes of Justice the crime is personal and the ladies are working against the clock to find this murderer before he strikes again. Eyes of Justice is written that it can be read as a stand alone, our authors make sure to have the right amount of background that new readers aren't lost and faithful followers don't get bogged down with already known details. The authors write with such authority on the various professions of our characters, crime, and television. The characters in the story are like old friends and they are very real people who deal with very real life situations that all of us can relate to. Also in this novel we meet a few new friends that hopefully we will see again down the road. In this novel I found myself laughing out loud in areas but also crying in parts. In this novel we see how the Ladies of Triple Threat lean not only on each other but their faith in time of crisis, we see how their faith carries them through the tragedies to the good times. This action-packed story grabs you from the beginning and keeps you guessing until the end. Anyone who enjoys Suspense stories will enjoy this book and this series. I HIGHLY recommend this book! I look forward to more Triple Threat Club Novels!!

Irish Healer
by
Nancy Herriman
mommiebethers
, March 12, 2012
I received this e-book from Worthy Publishing through NetGalley.com for free for my honest review of this e-book. My Thoughts: The Irish Healer is Nancy Herriman's debut novel and it is awesome. The Irish Healer is about Rachel Dunne, a healer from Ireland, who comes to England to help a widowed doctor pack up his home so he can move. Rachel leaves Ireland after being accused of killing a child she was caring for. She was found not guilty but that didn't stop people from her town to shun her and her family. Dr James Edmunds is looking to retire from medicine and spend time with his estranged daughter. Since his wife's death, the toddler has been raised by his sister in law. Rachel comes to England to do the packing job and finds herself constantly being pulled in the healing direction. As much as she wants to put the healing profession behind her, God continues to put people in her path that need her help. The Irish Healer is a beautiful story. A historical fiction novel but there is definitely a touch of romance in this novel that makes it an all around beautiful story. The characters are real people who deal with real life situations. The time period and places in this novel are well researched and beautifully described. As I read I could picture it all in my mind from the homes, the neighborhoods, and the clothing. This story also shows our characters who in the beginning lack faith and their journey to finding that faith and each other. I had a hard time putting this book down, I really found myself lost in all it has to offer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Christian Fiction with some romance. You won't be disappointed. I am excited to read more of Nancy Herriman's books!

Cuts Like a Knife
by
M K Gilroy
mommiebethers
, March 12, 2012
I received this e-book from Worthy Publishing through Netgalley.com free for my honest review of this e-book. Book Description: Chicago has a new resident"a heartless killer on a long crime spree. Kristen Conner (think Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality) is a good cop and a good girl: she loves her mom, goes to church and coaches her niece’s soccer team. And her track record and instincts as a detective are impeccable . . . but this case and this killer expose a blind spot that ultimately endangers those closest to her. Can she catch this hauntingly familiar culprit before he strikes again? Cuts Like a Knife is loaded with action, humor and wry introspection. My Thoughts: Cuts Like A Knife is M.K. Gilroy's debut novel. He has helped create hundreds of projects and launch dozens of authors, working in every area of the publishing industry from his first job as a proofreader to executive vice president and publisher"and just about everything in between. Cuts Like A Knife is an awesome, fast paced book with lots of humor mixed in with the suspense. Kristen Connor, the main character, is a very strong, single woman who decided to follow in her father's footsteps and becomes a police officer. She is very different from the other women in her family and she likes it that way. Kristen is put on a task force to help the F.B.I. capture a serial killer that has made his way to Chicago. Prior to Chicago, this killer has been in many other cities and has murdered over 40 women. Cuts Like A Knife is an awesome debut novel. The characters are likable, relatable, and you really feel like you are right there watching the story unfold. The details in the book are very clear and it is obvious that M.K. Gilroy did much research and has much knowledge in all of these areas. There are many laugh out loud points in the book and as the story unfolds you are kept guessing to the end. Definitely see the reference to Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality. I highly recommend this book to others who enjoy Christian Fiction Suspense and Thrillers. You will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more by M.K. Gilroy! Definitely a new author on my must read list!

Echoes of Titanic
by
Mindy Starns Clark
mommiebethers
, February 22, 2012
I received this e-book from Harvest House Publisher through Netgalley.com for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this e-book. Book Description: Kelsey Tate comes from sturdy stock. Her great-grandmother Adele endured the sinking of Titanic and made it safely to America, where she not only survived but thrived. Generations later, Kelsey works for the firm Adele founded nearly 100 years ago. Now facing a hostile takeover, the firm’s origins are challenged when new facts emerge about Adele’s actions on the night Titanic sank. Kelsey tries to defend the company and the great-grandmother she has long admired, but the stakes are raised when Kelsey’s boss is murdered and her own life threatened. Forced to seek help from Cole Thornton, a man Kelsey once loved"and lost, thanks to her success-at-all-costs mentality"she pursues mysteries both past and present. Aided by Cole and strengthened by the faith she’d all but forgotten in her climb up the corporate ladder, Kelsey races the clock to defend her family legacy, her livelihood, and ultimately her life. My Thoughts: Echoes of Titanic is the first book by Mindy Starns Clark I have read and I genuinely enjoyed it. This book is written by Mindy and her husband, John Campbell Clark who is a Titanic buff and her help with her books. Echoes of Titanic takes place in the present with flashbacks to the days on Titanic our characters had. This story is a very enjoyable one. It held my interest all the way to end. It also keeps you guessing to the end. The characters have much depth and real people who deal with real things. The details of Titanic and the events are very well researched and in these descriptions you can picture what the characters see. Echoes of Titanic also has strong themes of forgiveness and lost faith that is found through the story. This book has a little of everything but is mainly a Mystery/Suspense book. I truly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories about Titanic and also mystery and suspense.

Last Plea Bargain
by
Randy Singer
mommiebethers
, February 03, 2012
I received this e-book from Tyndale Publishing through Netgalley.com for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this e-book. Book Description: Plea bargains may grease the rails of justice, but for Jamie Brock, prosecuting criminals is not about cutting deals. In her three years as assistant DA, she’s never plea-bargained a case and vows she never will. But when a powerful defense attorney is indicted for murder and devises a way to bring the entire justice system to a screeching halt, Jamie finds herself at a crossroads. One by one, prisoners begin rejecting deals. Prosecutors are overwhelmed, and felons start walking free on technicalities. To break the logjam and convict her nemesis, Jamie must violate every principle that has guided her young career. But she has little choice. To convict the devil, sometimes you have to cut a deal with one of his demons. My Thoughts: The Last Plea Bargin by Randy Singer is an action packed, keeps you guessing until the end, legal thriller. I found myself completely engrossed in the story where I had a hard time putting it down. Jamie Brock is an assistant DA who is waiting for her mother's killer to be put to death. He is on death row and trying for his last chance of appeal. Her mother's murder is the reason Jamie became a DA. As Jamie starts to look into details of her mother's death and receives anonymous information about her father and others in the DA's office, Jamie doesn't know what to believe. She enlists the help of a police officer and a defense attorney. As the story unfolds, the truth is hard to believe. Randy Singer's The Last Plea Bargin is truly a legal thriller. It keeps you guessing until the very end. I found myself completely shocked at how it all came together. I really felt like I was there watching the whole thing unfold. I found myself unable to put the book down, did not want to miss anything. Randy Singer writes with much authority on the law, legal terminology, and how it all works. Throughout the book the theme of forgiveness was dominant. The necessity to forgive and allow God to handle the rest. I am a HUGE fan of legal thrillers and now a huge fan of Randy Singer! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys legal thrillers. This book will NOT disappoint!

Promise Me This
by
Cathy Gohlke

, January 09, 2012
I received this book from Tyndale Publishers for no charge for my honest review of this book. Book Description: Michael Dunnagan was never supposed to sail on the Titanic, nor would he have survived if not for the courage of Owen Allen. Determined to carry out his promise to care for Owen’s relatives in America and his younger sister, Annie, in England, Michael works hard to strengthen the family’s New Jersey garden and landscaping business. Annie Allen doesn’t care what Michael promised Owen. She only knows that her brother is gone"like their mother and father"and the grief is enough to swallow her whole. As Annie struggles to navigate life without Owen, Michael reaches out to her through letters. In time, as Annie begins to lay aside her anger that Michael lived when Owen did not, a tentative friendship takes root and blossoms into something neither expected. Just as Michael saves enough money to bring Annie to America, WWI erupts in Europe. When Annie’s letters mysteriously stop, Michael risks everything to fulfill his promise"and find the woman he’s grown to love"before she’s lost forever. My Thoughts: Promise Me This is the first book by Cathy Gohlke I have had the pleasure of reading. Promise Me This is a beautiful story that starts in Southampton week before Titanic is set to sale. Owen Allen, a gardener, gets a job aboard Titanic so he can get passage to America to help his Aunt and Uncle with their Nursery. Also to get away from the cruel Aunt he and sister have had to endure for years. So Owen secures schooling and boarding in Southampton for his sister, Annie, to get her our of the grips of their Aunt with the promise that as soon as he has the money he will make sure she gets passage. Before Owen leaves he meets Michael,a 13 yr old runaway trying to get away from his cruel Uncle and a painful past. Owen helps Michael secure a job in Southampton and does what he can in the little time left in Southampton for Michael. Michael ends up stowing away on Titanic and Owen, again finds him and helps him. Owen starts teaching Michael about God and the gift of his Son and having faith. Owen also vows to Michael that they are brothers and that Owen, Michael and Annie will be a family. Titanic starts to sink, Owen gets Michael on one of the last life boats but makes Michael promise that if Owen doesn't make it that Michael will continue with their plans of going to America to Owen's family and to take care of Annie. Michael makes it to America but finds out that Owen didn't survive. Michael continues on with their plans to work with Owen's family and to get passage for Annie as soon as possible. This story just grabbed me and hung on to me. I found I couldn't put the book down. The historical facts of this book were very well researched and very well known by Cathy Gohlke. The characters were real and had depth. The author truly depicted good and evil in this story. The different characters and the different places they go you could "see" as you read the details. I found myself lost in this world. I highly recommend this book to others who enjoy historical fiction, especially about Titanic and WWI. I look forward to reading more my Cathy Gohlke.
