The most fun you'll have with secret societies and world-ending conspiracies all year. Harkaway is a wonderful writer and this book is a complete delight to read.

Easily the best debut novel of 2011. The wonderful writing and depth of character and setting reminded me of Susanna Clarke's debut Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. The story of the long, drawn-out game (really a duel) played by two wizards using their proteges as surrogates is mesmerizing, as is the story of the two pawns slowly discovering the nature of the game they've been forced to play. An amazing book.
