Powell's Staff:
Books to Fill the TV-Shaped Hole in Your Heart
(0 comment)
This last week, we had to say goodbye to TV shows about a complicated, rich family; a murdery, wannabe actor; an enthusiastically kind football coach and his team; and a would-be stand-up comedian in 1950s New York. We already miss them...

Freedom

BIG book, never read his earlier "Corrections." This was an immediately engaging and throrough examination of a few modern American families that traverses many aspects of contemporary life. During the time I was reading it, I had a conversation with a friend about what ever happened to ZeroPopulationGrowth in light of the larger environmental movement. That night I was reading "Freedom" and ZPG was the topic in the novel. The same experience recurred with other contemporary, or contemporary with my life (late 50s), situations. For lovers of big, thick books, I recommend. I did lose some sleep for wanting to read. Some superficialities but most typically got examined at length in other parts of the novel. Quite a feat.

I'm a fan of Dara Horn. This is the second of her books that I've read. They are eminently readable. This explores eastern Europe yiddishkeit, the art world of Chagall and his writer contemporaries, life in America and life before and after our time on earth. Just try it!

more reminiscent of The Poisonwood Bible than some others of hers. Nice use of language. Set in Mexico and US, 30's - 50's… Frida and Diego and Trotsky and the red-baiting era in US Good read.

Quietly engaging; writing is haunting. Love, love, loved it.
