Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Hunger Games Trilogy Boxed Set
by
Suzanne Collins

Don't pick up the first book unless you are ready to power through all 3. They read as one long novel anyway and are nearly impossible to put down, even after the end of the last chapter. Though touted for adolescents, this trilogy leaves even jaded adults with much to ponder. You will fall in love with Katniss the protagonist and both her suitors, and your heart will ache with the final blow her young self. Beautiful and intense, this has been the best read I've had in a long time.

Gypsy Morph Genesis Shanarra 03
by
Terry Brooks

I had not previously been a fan of post-apocololyptic (sp?) fiction, but I've been a fan of Terry Brooks for decades. His look at the demise of the world through his "Word and Void" series and on to the "Genesis of Shanara" is remarkable. Especially living in the Northwest and knowing the places he so often describes... it is vastly entertaining as well as spookily plausible. A page turner all the way through with a satisfying conclusion.
