Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Grow Your Own Drugs A Year with James Wong
by
James Wong

I'm a big fan of DIY remedies, cleaning products, etc., so this is a great addition to my library of such types of books. I first heard of James Wong from his BBC Series "Grow Your Own Drugs," and was pleased he had a couple of books out as well. The more natural the better, and Wong does a great job!

High Line The Inside Story of New York Citys Park in the Sky

Whether you have been to High Line or not, check out this book because it's fun to get the history of the High Line when it was the train and the timeline of the process it took to make it into the incredible park it is now. If you haven't been there, the book will definitely entice you to make the trip to NYC to see it. If you HAVE been to the park, it'll make you appreciate it a whole lot more! And the book has TONS of photos of the High Line, from past to present. It's a good coffee table addition.

I Like You Hospitality Under The Influence UK
by
Amy Sedaris

I LOVE "I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence." Amy Sedaris is a woman after my own heart. This is a delightfully cheeky coffee table book covering the whole spectrum of hospitality and entertaining, stuffed full of great recipes, ideas, tips and step-by-step instructions on ALL KINDS of stuff, a lot of which you'll never use but is always phrased in such a hilarious manner that you'll want to read about it anyway. Seriously — it covers just about everything, from how to make a little money at your cocktail parties to entertaining the elderly to dealing with curious/snoopy company ala a medicine chest filled with marbles. Assembled like a big scrap book, it is definitely a desert island top pick of mine. You know...for all of that entertaining I'd be doing while stranded on a desert island.

Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills
by

This book is an awesome resource for people who want to be more self-sufficient/self-reliant and environmentally sound. Lots of recipes for making cleaning products, laundry soap, balms, salves and more using a lot of stuff that you likely already have at home! It also touches on starting a garden. I refer to this book all the time and I actually feel like I am doing my part to make the environment a little healthier all while saving a little money by not having to by expensive, harsh cleaning products at the store.
