Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I have not read this book yet. But I am going to because no one, no matter who they are or what power they think they have, has the right to say what can be published and what I can read.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Although I enjoy reading erotica, I found the much touted "Fifty Shades of Grey" a pale imitation of the classic "The Story of O" and to be honest, a little boring. The characters were dull and not at interesting, and their supposed obsessions fairly tame, if not downright repetitive... after reading a few chapters, I skipped to the end, because frankly, I wanted to go to sleep. Read it if you need to be up on what's in, but don't expect a book you want to read again just for the thrill.

Lost Ones

Although I was not certain I would enjoy a good old southern boy war hero book, I do tend to trust Powell's Staff picks and Atkin's first in this series, The Ranger, was recommended, so I gave it a try. It was a great read and I eagerly awaited another in the series. The second in this series, The Lost Ones, definitely did not disappoint. The characters are flawed humans you find yourself caring about, the pace is fast enough to keep you interested, and there's just enough humor to entertain.
