Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Stories from the Bog: On Madness, Philosophy, and Psychoanalysis
by
Kavanaugh, Patrick B.
diane howard
, February 01, 2013
Dr. Pat Kavanaugh is not only one of our most esteemed psychoanalysts in Southeast Michigan, he is known world-wide for his enormous and sweeping knowledge of the human mind and soul both in treatment and out here in the "ether". I had the privilege of being in his company both in class and in discussion. Our seminar, which lasted three years on a weekly, lengthly basis, ostensibly was to study "The Interpretation of Dreams," (we might have made it through the Dora dream) but our topic was both existential and epistemological in scope. All stones were turned. Never have I enjoyed a mental exercise more and never have I met a person more qualified to be titled" Dr of Philosophy". This is a collection of many of the seminal thoughts of his (perhaps germinated in seminars ) that is familiar to those of lucky to have been one of those five students, but also new and challenging to anyone who has the courage to dare current thinking of the human mind. If you dare to be challenged by Dr. Kavanaugh, you will not be disappointed. If you are, try again.

Secret History
by
Donna Tartt
diane howard
, January 30, 2013
This book began with a dive into classical literature students as a chosen group to "leave" the traditional curriculum at the eastern ivy league college and study with Julian, a treasured, enigmatic and charismatic scholar of classical Greek language. The dive takes the reader into a precious, protected and glowing world of a handful of idiosyncratic students. Each of them are fascinating in and of themselves, as is Julian..but Julian remains enigmatic. Against this brilliant character study of very diverse students, which is enough for any novel in and of itself, we are drawn into a bizarre and truly phantasmal "backstory" so to speak, which unfolds tantalizingly slow. We are given a clue at the beginning, but somehow the author made this reviewer forget about it and take the plunge. To anyone interested in the academic world of literature as I was while studying latin to meet a requirement for a second degree, it is a delight. But you in no way need that as a background to find the plot breathtaking in its shock to the reader's system. The backstory becomes front and center and we are swimming for our (and others) lives. The whole book challenges one's sensibilities and will no doubt, be wildly discussed in book clubs. I reread the last half to be amazed once again at how this unfolds. This is a role model for character depth, plot, a fascinating setting, as well as the beautifully crafted descriptive prose. I am in awe.

Elsewhere a Memoir
by
Richard Russo
diane howard
, January 02, 2013
Like all of Mr. Russo's work, his strong voice spoke to me from beginning to end. While his fiction is amusing, wry, and highly able to be pictured by the reader, this book is all of this and more. Being a memoir, he managed to craft a narrative that did all the amusing, and charming the reader, as well as, for this reader, evoking a very good cry especially from about mid-book to the end. How he makes the real pain of his life somehow entertaining to read is beyond this would-be author. My empathy was pulled out of me on every page it seemed. While it resonated with my long and painful issues with my own mother, this narrative brilliance could not fail to touch any reader. This beautiful writer has never let me down. (Also do read his collection called "Interventions" , such classics and beautifully packaged.
