I was looking forward to getting this book to review as my son suffers from anxiety issues and has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder. We have been striving for ways to help him though his worries, which seem to be increasing in certain areas. This book does a great job in explaining anxiety and giving children someone to identify with (in this case a dinosaur). The book explains anxiety in simple to understand terms but using real life language for children. I think this book has done a great job of reassuring children about their anxiety and giving them strategies to cope with the day to day to challenges they face. In my sons case, reading something like this might not be best for him as once he knows a "label" for his problem it tends to become more prevalent and he focuses on it more. That being said, the language used in this book can easily be used by parents to explain about how a child is feeling without neccessarily labelling the condition. The strategies suggested are good common ideas, that children can easily do. I really liked how the "emergency switch" strategy was explained as it gives a simple code word that can be used in the future with a child when experiencing issues and give them a coping method in public situations where a parent can simply say "emergency switch" to remind them. Overall, this was a great book, the illustrations were nothing extraordinary and somewhat dull but the tools provided are great resources.

I loved that this book explored the different sides of hearing loss (deaf/HOH) without being judgemental or bringing into it the often highly charged debate that goes on. She simply provided facts or experiences from her own life and those of her friends. It was a truly accurate picture of the challenges and triumphs a person with hearing lsos can experience. It was nice to seet hat their was not a sense of disatisfaction with choice that were made for her growing up, both by her parents and in the schools she attended. My daughter has a hearing loss and it was very beneficial to read from the perspective of an older child and how she viewed the world and waht was going on. She has done an excellent job of not only dispelling myths about hearing loss nad deafness but also in weaving her own stories in with factual information to produce an interesting read. The author found a way to tell her story and touch the hearts of her readers without portraying a need to pity or look down on her. She clearly showed how she triumphed over the adversity she encountered and how it formed her as a person. She did an excellent job at sharing factual information for those unaware of some of the greater intriciaces of the deaf/HOH world. A great read for a parent of a HOH child/adult or anyone who works with children or adults with heairng loss. Thanks for the insight into your life.
