Invisible Monsters
by
Palahniuk, Chuck
Kristina Mageau

I was thoroughly engaged while reading this book, and at times it was almost too dark and gross for me. There is the possibility to be offended, although it is more of an intense experience of fun and mystery than anything else.

A fun and obscure view of Portland. Recommended for those who want to explore Portland in a different way, or for those who are just curious about what is on the unbeaten path.

Grapes of Wrath
by
John Steinbeck
Kristina Mageau
, August 30, 2012
Pretty well written, Steinbeck shares an interesting tale with an intensely historical perspective. The intensity comes from the dark time in history, filled with cultural and economic depth. There are dull points, where the descriptions are more wordy than necessary unless the reader truly cannot get enough of that particular point in time.

Wisdom Sits in Places
by
Keith H. Basso
Kristina Mageau
, August 19, 2012
The author showed his humility in coming to a culture that was new to him, which allowed me to feel more relaxed about my own weaknesses in understanding the culture. After this, he continued to go into great depth about the Western Apache, the place, the landscape, the people, and his personal journey within it all.

Such a spellbound, captivating read, this book gave me a better understanding of vodou and its cultural connections. If more people read this, fewer misrepresentations of vodou would be in existence.

Beloved
by
Toni Morrison
Kristina Mageau
, August 19, 2012
I was blown away by the intensity of this book, and I could not put it down. The characters were full of life, strength, and hostility for great reason. I have never thought about this time in history in the same way since. Morrison really opened my eyes to the true horrors that lasted, and the struggles that still continue in some way in the modern day.

Political Mind A Cognitive Scientists Guide to Your Brain & Its Politics
by
George Lakoff
Kristina Mageau
, August 19, 2012
This book starts out strong, and then spends an extraordinary amount of time reiterating the same argument rather than adding to it or making a new one. There are some interesting points in the beginning, and even in the middle. However, by the end, the book became quite dull.

America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines
by
Gail Collins
Kristina Mageau
, August 19, 2012
Although this book goes into great detail about the history of women, it primarily focuses on white women. There is much lacking here for every other race. If this book releases an updated edition with more inclusion, it will be well worth reading.

The story that is frequently alluded to in many aspects of pop culture, the boys are full of complexity here. Reading this made me think about what humans are capable of, when they're faced with new and disastrous circumstances.

Angela Davis An Autobiography
by
Angela Yvonne Davis
Kristina Mageau
, August 08, 2012
A very fluid and interesting read, this book lays out the story of Angela Davis and how she came into her own powerful way of life. It gives the reader a better sense of history, politics, racism, inequalities, prison life, institutions, and who Angela Davis was. The book is a blend of the personal with the larger systems.

Cunt A Declaration of Independence 2nd Edition

This book was very powerful for me. I felt more connected to my body, myself, and my sisters after reading it. I realized how important it is to be around women because of it, especially during that time of the month. If you want to feel more empowered as a woman, or if you want to better understand women, I suggest reading this book.

Emerald City An Environmental History of Seattle
by
Matthew Klingle
Kristina Mageau
, August 08, 2012
Although this book goes into great depths about the environmental history of Seattle, it leaves out a lot of details about certain groups of people along the way. The book discusses many groups of people, with men almost always being the only focus. Women are rarely mentioned, and occasionally mentioned in passing. There are other books that shed light on the role that women played in history-- this just isn't one of them.

Return on Sustainability
by
Kevin Wilhelm
Kristina Mageau
, August 08, 2012
If you are looking to learn more about the business world and how it intersects with sustainability, I highly recommend this book. It is full of useful information about how to set sustainability standards and how to understand them. It is more geared towards for-profits rather than non-profits so it is not entirely broad. However, it does attempt to reach out past just one market or industry so that many companies could use the book to figure out how to make sustainability part of their story.

Very fun to read once I let go of my ego, this book helped me to understand group situations on a much deeper level. I did not know what paradoxes were and how they played roles in my life until I read this book. Now, I have a tough time not thinking of paradoxes on a daily basis.

American Cultural Patterns Revised
by
Edward C Stewart
Kristina Mageau
, August 05, 2012
This book achieved its purpose in shedding light on the American cultural patterns that we sometimes take for granted. However, there were many times where it was all too simplistic and not focused enough on the potential complexities. The book was very dry and academic, which worked for its purpose. In general, it was not an enjoyable book to read. This being said, it still expanded my knowledge of what American cultural patterns are.

Group Genius The Creative Power of Collaboration

This was a well written book, and it held my attention throughout its entirety. I now know more about connections between groups and activities, so that the concept of collaboration is more clear and attainable. The book was fun to read, in part because of the author's personal experiences that he shared with vitality.

The Book Thief
by
Markus Zusak
Kristina Mageau
, August 04, 2012
As far as YA books go, this is a pretty good one. It provides an interesting perspective at a dark time in history. However, there are too many unrealistic and overly optimistic parts thrown into this book to make it worthy of suggesting others to give it a read. Those who prefer a more rosy look at history, or who are in elementary school, might want to take a go at this one.
