Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Owl and the Nightingale: A New Verse Translation
by
Simon Armitage

, August 16, 2022
A fun and easy to read modern translation of a comic poem from about 1200 A.D., originally in what is now called Middle English. An Owl and a Nightingale quarrel (in rhyme) over which is the better bird. The translator, Armitage, chose to maintain the spirit of the original, but changes in English pronunciation and now obsolete words would make a literal translation one that either made no sense, or didn't rhyme, and rhyme is clearly important to this book. Think of it as Dr. Seuss gets angry, and you will have a good time reading this. You don't have to be a Middle English scholar, although that text is provided on the left hand side of the page, while the right hand side has the modern version. A fine gift for those who enjoy Belloc and other witty poets.

Your Complete Guide to a Successful & Secure Retirement
by
Kevin Grogan

, August 06, 2019
Published in 2019, this is a good guide to retirement planning AND spending, including maximizing Social Security, using Health Savings Plans, the right way to draw down money from savings, and various medicare options. The writing is clear, and detailed enough to be useful. There isn't any 'tricks' or 'hacks' here- just good information that you can use. If you are starting to think about retirement, it is a good time to get this book. If you are approaching retirement in a few years, this is a great time to get this book.

Mink River

Brian Doyle does a bang-up job with this wonderful novel. (And I use wonderful as wonder-full.) The style might take you a bit to get used to. Up to page 74 I was thinking, "This just might be a great book, if he can sustain it", and after that I knew it was a great book. It is big-hearted, moving, and fun. If Ken Kesey had liked people when he wrote "Sometimes a Great Notion", he would have come up with a story like this one.
