Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Rebbe The Life & Teachings of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson
by
Joseph Telushkin
confiteorbenedictus
, October 22, 2014
This is a superb look at an amazing man. Rebbe Schneerson was wise, deep, staggeringly intelligent, and even prophetic. He was also an organizer and gifted leader. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin does a fine job giving us a life of this towering figure of the 20th Century. This book is a well-rounded biography organized thematically, and it is not devoid of honest criticism, though it is hard not to come away from reading Rebbe with a sense of awe or at least admiration for the Rebbe, who is largely responsible for making the Chabad movement the vibrant network it is today.

What is the Point of Being a Christ
by
Timothy Radcliffe
confiteorbenedictus
, January 01, 2013
Don't read Radcliffe expecting to have either a liberal or conservative bias affirmed--his book cuts through all such distinctions to focus on our messed-up human nature and our need for God. He is provocative, deep, and very funny.

What Happened to Sophie Wilder
by
Beha, Christopher
confiteorbenedictus
, August 04, 2012
Right up front I have to say this is a qualified recommendation--this book frustrated me more than once. Beha is a talented writer, and perhaps "What Happened to Sophie Wilder" is a sign that he is on a trajectory to write much better (and less MFA-ish) books. I did not find the characters ultimately compelling and their shallowness was a turnoff. There are some fine moments here, but they are spoiled by an overpowering sense of "Look, here's a literary work." Regarding the religious aspects of the book: they are too pat. I am reminded of "Catholic" writers such as Greene, Waugh, and Godden, but Beha is not yet in their league...but I'm rooting for him to make it there.
