Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Hundred Secret Senses

Amy Tan The Hundred Secret Senses. Amy Tan! I enjoy reading anything that Amy Tan writes because of her inimitable style. Often her novels' family members have interesting, yet complicated and conflicting relationships, eventually revealing great affection underlying any superficial ongoing irritations. In this case, the relationship is between the protagonist Olivia, and her half sister, Kwan. Kwan joins Olivia's US family only as a result of a final moments pledge to Olivia's dying father made by her (surprised and startled) mother, to find his long lost daughter from a prior liaison in China and unite her with his US family. Once Kwan is found and brought to the US, she and Olivia embark on adventures, with the much older Kwan often invoking,or claiming to have, unusual Secret Senses to see, know and hear mystical presences. The book takes interesting turns and the journey to China together in their adult lives reveals a turning point for several characters and provides exciting glimpses onto the past, a story within the main story which is just as riveting. A good solid read that is true to Ms. Tan's style.

Wordy Shipmates

Sarah Vowell has an uncanny ability to bring history alive, and make it fun and interesting. Being a natural storyteller shows up in her writing and she is able to dissect historical facts and integrate them well by providing the very anecdotes that in my estimation characterize the events in a way that makes them memorable and relevant. In this case, she sheds light on some of the founding settlers and their stumbling upon what they wish to develop in the "New World." They find themselves bumping into some of the same obstacles that they encountered in England, and from which they had fled. Fascinating.
