Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I read this book a very long time ago, and it is still something that I recommend to anyone who hasn't read it. It was very moving, and I feel like it is still incredibly relevant now, though some of the experiences definitely reflect the times. This is a relatively short book, and it's very engaging. I think it's a great recommendation, especially for pre-teens or teens.

This book was incredible. Objectively, I knew exactly what I was supposed to think while reading this, but I found myself in the exact same position as the narrator, Gemma: I knew the kidnapper had done something terrible and wrong, but he grew on me as well. I cared for him, even as I feared his actions and reactions. This book left me confused and discombobulated and completely out of sorts. As I finished the book, I ran through the list of possible endings, knowing that there are only so many ways that a book about kidnapping can end, and I found that none of them would satisfy me. This book did an incredible job of making me feel the narrator and making her words real and true. I loved it, even as I hated it.
