Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void
by
Mary Roach

Read this book! It's fun and funny and amazing and even a bit shocking to discover what really goes on where no man has gone before. Much more than everything you ever wanted to know about space travel and life in a low gravity environment. Mary Roach leaves no stone unturned in her quest to understand what astronauts experience moment to moment outside Earth's gravitational pull.

Blackout
by
Connie Willis

I love Connie Willis, but it's not a relationship where she can do no wrong. Sometimes she goes over long or belabors a metaphor. Her book Passages is a good example. This book had me worried that she was doing it again, but she pulls it together and leaves off with a real cliffhanger. She's good with page turning plotting and 3D characterizations. Recommended to historical fiction and time travel fans. Can't wait to read the next book!

Black Flower
by
Howard Bahr

, August 21, 2012
I just loved this book. Howard Bahr's prose is beautiful. The story of the battle of Franklin, Tennessee in 1864 towards the end of the US Civil War is a true event. It's a blood bath for the Confederate Army and the novel takes place at the home of the McGavock family. Their house was used as a makeshift hospital. The story is all fiction, but the author brings everything to life in such vivid detail in the midst of all the suffering of the battle and its aftermath. Highly recommended.

I only use 3 books to teach writing. This is one of them. I still use it regularly for my own writing practice! It has some of the best short writing prompts and is thoughtful and encouraging for beginning and experienced writers. Highly recommended

Courage & Craft Writing Your Life Into Story
by
Barbara Abercrombie

If you own only one book on the craft of writing this should be it. If you want to start out writing, start here. I don't like to read books about writing since I feel it's the worst form of procrastination that a writer can indulge in, but here I would make an exception and recommend this book for its wisdom, encouragement, exercises and ideas. This book helped me more than once overcome blocks and gave me inspiration to keep writing. Written with heart and with both feet on the ground, it is the most useful writing book I've read, ever. If you ever dreamed of writing, just buy it and read it.

The Virgin of Small Plains

the mystery is not so mysterious, but the characters are interesting and kept me turning pages to see how things would work out for them. A bit predictable, but still entertaining and a good choice for the beach.

Austenland

Humorous, chick-lit style but with a bit more depth. A good dirversion and entertaining. I was surprized by the ending. Hale has an engaging writing style and keeps the story moving. recommended for people who enjoy books that stab at Austen-mania and Colin Firth obsessions!

Maisie Dobbs: Maisie Dobbs 1
by
Jacqueline Winspear
MK Karni
, August 21, 2012
Like a breath of fresh air! An original detective novel, just when I thought every possible variation in the genre was out there. Winspear's Maisie Dobbs is a wholly believable woman detective in 1929 in England. Her combination of intelligence, sensitivity, and hard headed common sense make her fascinating to follow in solving a mystery whose origins are in the Great War, some 10 years before. Part detective story, part love story and a vivid depiction of life in England in the 20's, this book works on all levels and was a very satisfying read. Highly recommended!

Master & Commander Aubrey 1

O'Brian, Patrick

Great escape reading. Set in the late 18th Century amid the conflict between Britain, Spain and France, O'Brian has all the technical details right and his characters voices are authentic. Exciting, good pacing. A classic in military fiction.

Bellini Card

This is the 3rd installment in a wonderful, original historical detective series set in 19th Ottoman Turkey. The plot is intriguing, the characters are well developed and believable. The historical details are fascinating and are added with a grace and ease that pull you in and carry you off. Plus, Yashim loves to cook! The recipes and cooking techniques of 19th century Ottoman Turkey were every bit as interesting as the detective story. Highly recommended.
