Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Arc of a Scythe 01 Scythe
by

In a futuristic world where natural death has been eliminated, scythes are chosen to end people’s lives in order to keep population growth under control. Citra and Rowan, two teens, have been chosen to be apprentices to a scythe and when the time comes, one of them will be chosen to become a scythe. Scythe has a very interesting premise and it starts off well. It immediately poses the question of whether death should come naturally to people or whether people should be the ones to decide when life ends? It’s morbid and heavy but it’s intriguing at the same time and it kept me eager to find out what was next in the story. This take on the young adult dystopian genre is now an unexpected favorite of mine and I ordered the second book before I even finished this one so that I could continue with this series. The pacing of this book was top notch. I struggle with books that are too slow but there was so much action and so many twists and turns that I didn’t feel bored at any point in this book. The author knows how to spectacularly weave action, plot, and character development together to captivate readers until the very last page. I didn’t want this book to end when I was reading it. It is seriously one of the best books I have ever read. I highly recommend Scythe to everyone, especially for fans of young adult books. Whether it be the well developed characters or the action or the futuristic society, I’m sure that everyone can find something to love about Scythe.

My friend has this book, and I absolutely love it! I want to buy it myself, but I need more money. I always borrow the book from her. It is the best book ever, besides Harry Potter.
