Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Speak No Evil

It was like watching an explosive and complex car crash unfold in front of you. This book rips apart a small town in Maine as secrets are revealed and people are murdered. The story was written so you get bits and pieces from all the main characters as the story progresses. You get to watch all of the characters, with their own secrets and motives, careening towards each other as the bodies are discovered. DeMello does a great job of keeping the identity of the murderer secret and the plot moving a great clip.

One Eyed Jack

I was fortunate enough to win a copy of this through Goodreads and really enjoyed reading this book. Christopher Lynch wastes no time on the mundane and there is absolutely no filler. Every word in this story works to get you to the end. The characters are well rounded, the story is believable and even though the main character, Jack, is a dirty blackmailer you really do pull for him as he is relatable and surprisingly likeable. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Let Me Go

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy from Goodreads. This was my first foray into the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell series so I was a little lost at the very beginning - trying to sort out the characters and what their relationships are (and who the heck is this Gretchen everyone keeps mentioning......). This story gives you enough background to catch up on what you have missed without seeming like it has to rehash the previous 5 books. The characters are real and complex. The story is fantastic and carries itself at a nice clip, not too slow that you start to get bored but no fast that it seems like the author is skipping stuff and rushing you to the end. The supporting role Gretchen Lowell plays is sublime. They way she can manipulate everyone and everything around her is genius. Her emotional complexity, from her psychopathic obsession to sadistic manipulation to oddly placed humanity was so well written that it never felt forced or out of character. Chelsea Cain has managed to write a female serial killer, a stereotypical masculine role, that has more sex appeal than Marilyn herself. I also Love that this is set in Portland and that I recognized so much in the book (yesterday I passed the Dancing Bare and laughed out loud). I will be rushing out to get the previous 5 books to start this saga from the beginning.
