Writers on the Edge 22 Writers Speak about Addiction & Dependency
by
Diana M Raab, James Brown, Jerry Stahl
godbyd
, November 11, 2012
"Writers on the Edge" is a book compiled by stories of 22 different writers and their stories of various addictions and struggles they have encountered within their life. While the purpose of the book is very good, I didn't feel most of the stories were well written. There were a few stories that really were gripping and very helpful as I was allowed into their life to see their story. In these few instances it was as though I felt the pain they felt and was drawn to reach out and try to help them overcome the problems they were facing. With that being said, I do feel for anyone facing depression, battling alcohol, drugs, pornography, sexual addiction, suicide, etc... This would be a very good book to help you understand that you alone and that you can find strength and courage from the pages of this book. This would be a good resource to use in counseling and addict groups. Many of the stories were very insightful just not written in a way that I found the most helpful. I do appreciate what the editors have tried to accomplish in putting this book together and hope that people from all walks of life receive help from its material. I received this book from Review the Book for my honest evaluation.

by
Rowley, Lee and Cohen, Sharon and Askenburg, Bill
godbyd
, October 25, 2012
"199 Internet-Based Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars" is a very insightful and hands on type of book. Author Sharon L. Cohen gives the reader many helpful insights into how one can begin a business, what to look for and expect concerning the positive as well as the negative aspects. She deals with running a business online, how to set up a home office, advertising, creating an effective web-site and so much more. Then after helping the reader learn what must be done to get a business up and running she devotes the rest of the book to many different types of businesses that can be started within this one thousand dollar amount. She gives information on businesses such as: Advertising, Animals, Clothing, Collectibles, Food, Health Care, Writing and so much more. Each of these areas, as well as others, is expanded upon giving the reader a better understanding of what might work in their local area. She certainly helps the reader see the importance of finding their own niche and not trying to just copy someone's work. There are personal stories included throughout the book of those who have started their own business to provide inspiration and support. There is a very helpful business plan included at the end of the book as well as a table of contents to help the reader jump around should they be looking for a particular area of interest. I found this to be a very insightful book and one that anyone who is considering starting a new business should read. This book was provided by Review The Book for my honest review.

Hookitty-Tookitty-Tah

This is a very enjoyable book. I found the wording to be entertaining and found myself laughing out loud several times. The graphics are wonderful and vivid. When I read about the yellow dragon, I wondered what could be done to protect the town's people, but quickly found that a little boy by the name of Hookitty-Tookitty-Tah wasn't afraid at all. He goes to work to help the previous yellow dragon that had since changed colors to return to his beloved yellow. Follow along and see how this young lad helps this big dragon with his troublesome issue. I feel this would be a wonderful book for story time in the local library, schools and childcare settings. Where Are All the Men? Why Don't More Men Commit to God? Why Don't More Men Commit to Marriage?
by
Garry And Ellen Duguid
godbyd
, October 10, 2012
This is a very well written book that men everywhere could learn from. It is very straight forward and deals with the real issues of men and marriage. The authors help us to look into our childhood and how our past makes an impact in how we move into marriage and what type of things (good or bad) influence us. There is a very detailed look into the various attacks on marriage and how the sin nature of man impacts all that happens within the lives of the couple. There is the discussion of God's view of marriage and how both man and woman should line up to God's views rather than make their own. When a couple makes their own rules and goes against the rules of God, it naturally brings hurt, disappointment and eventually disaster. Also included are the views of the Apostle Paul and how submission and roles are to be looked at within the marriage. For a marriage to be healthy, it must have strong communication as a basic foundation along with love and respect. There is also a portion given to what love isn't and how easily couples have chosen to believe the lies of the world concerning love. Lastly, there is a look at redemption and how by the redemption of God's grace within one's life, they can look at their spouse with the love of God. This is a book that would help both man and woman, but a strong call for men to step up and be accounted for as the leader and male influence within their family and marriage. 4 of 5 stars Received from and reviewed for Reviewthebook.com

The Preacher and the Prostitute
by
Brenda A. Barrett
godbyd
, September 30, 2012
Author Brenda Barrett has done more than a wonderful job of helping the reader see life's difficulties at their worst and how faith and trust in God can see one through. While there are many circumstances that are found within the book that most every reader would relate to in some form or fashion, there are also blessings and hope for those who don't allow the circumstance to control them. When former prostitute Maribel changes her lifestyle, gives her heart to Jesus and begins singing in the local church choir she encounters the new pastor Mark Ellington. Mark is completely head over heels about Maribel until he discovers what she used to do before becoming apart of the church. This is a heart wrenching time for him as he is writing a book on forgiveness, yet he can't seem to get past what she has done in her past. All of this is exposed within Maribel's life because of a boss who wants his way with her and a nosy church member who wants her daughter to marry the new pastor. This book shares the conflict that many find in the corporate world as well as within the church. No one is immune to trouble and difficulty, it is how one handles it that makes them strong and the person that God intended them to be. Being in the church or without doesn't protect one from gossip and hurt, but having Jesus to turn to in the time of need is the difference maker. This is a very well written book from beginning to end. I desire to read more of author Brenda Barrett's material after reading this soul searching book. If you are looking for a book to stretch your forgiveness level this would be a great read to challenge you to become the person you should be in the area of forgiveness. 5 of 5 stars

How to Apologize to Your Woman...so that she won't use it against you in the future
by
Karen Field Bolek
godbyd
, September 09, 2012
Apologizing isn't a easy task for most people, so author Karen Field Bolek goes into detail of the importance of apologizing and the reasoning behind it. Many men see it as a sign of weakness, and for some women they could as well, however when done in the right context it is very beneficial for both parties involved. How a man leads is vitally important to his lady. If he is a dictator then there will be problems along the way, yet if he is understanding and leads with compassion, yet fairly he can be respected and honored within his role. Taking time to listen to the lady is so important and something that a man must learn to do if he is to ever be an effective leader. Listening is more than with just the ears it is also with the heart. A lady desires her man's attention and is deeply fulfilled when he gives her the attention that she is longing and looking for. When she goes without this attention there begins to be disharmony within the relationship. If he doesn't learn how to listen as well as communication in response there will be disharmony. Communication from both parties is so vital to making the relationship work. One must really think about what they say and how it is received from the other person. There are many illustrations and examples given to better help a couple work through any areas of conflict. Bringing a conflict to a peaceful resolution is helpful to both involved and strengthens the relationship. There is additional resources listed for reference and additional study. This is a very insightful book for any couple who desires to make their relationship deeper, stronger and more fruitful as they move forward together. Guillermina and the Rose: The Story of a Little Girl Who Only Wanted to Be Wanted
by
Cush, Don
godbyd
, September 05, 2012
"Guillermina and the Rose" is one of the finest books that I have read. This story begins with Robert taking a quick seventeen mile trip from San Diego to Tijuana just inside the Mexican border. He returned to see how the town fared after being there many years earlier during his youth. This trip disturbed him as he saw children along the streets in less than healthy conditions. He begin to inquire why they were on the streets instead of in school and soon was lead to an orphanage that seemed to represent the "Casa." This caused a great amount of interest within his mind as he was apart of a large computer firm in California and he wanted to get the computers within the orphanage to test how a child could learn English at an early age as their second language. Soon the reader will find Robert inside the orphanage meeting with the nuns that ran the orphanage. After much persuasion he was allowed to place the computers within the school and then his life forever changed. Not only had he med a young girl named Guillermina that totally stole his heart, but he learned about many activities that happened within the orphanage that caused great harm to the young girls. Soon Robert's quest was much more than getting computers in the school and conducting this experiment, rather it was to get Guillermina out of this awful situation and away to a new life as well as helping all the other girls within this gated community. I experienced happiness at the love of Guillermina and Robert who she learned to call "Daddy" and extreme anger at what was happening behind the walls of this orphanage. I can truly say it kept me reading and never wanting to stop. I can happily say it ends with a great outcome or I think I would have been ripped apart with all the hurt and abuse these little girls suffered. While there is much more that is presented within this book than a quick review will allow, I can say without hesitation that one can find themselves with a great amount of emotions running as you turn the pages of this fantastic book racing to the end toward a surprise and fulfilling ending. The rose what does that mean? Well don't stop reading till you find out, it is a remarkable part of the story. 5 of 5 stars.

Chasing Revenge
by
Anthony Odom

, September 04, 2012
Chasing Revenge is an absolutely AWESOME book! I was engrossed in this page turner from the very beginning and was never disappointed in the flow and storyline all the way to the end. U.S. Marshall's Box and Carl are entertaining and enjoyable to follow along as they allow the reader to become quickly involved in their race to catch a fugitive named Fisher who escaped from prison. This call would cause them to leave sunny California and head to a much colder climate in Portland, Oregon. Box wasn't excited about having to go to this colder location as he would have to stop and purchase some much needed warmer clothing for this assignment. He hated the thought of being cold on stakeouts and on this manhunt causing him to leave his warm home front. After arriving in Oregon, the adventure moves at a pace that keeps one on edge with every page. There is so much adventure that I can't see anyone who enjoys a mystery, murder, action packed book not enjoying this one. Fisher seems to always stay one step ahead of everyone, causing a great amount of frustration for Box and Carl as they try to anticipate his next move. Whether it's in a crowded gun show, a hotel, bar or other establishment, there is always the need for one to look over their shoulder to see who might be around. Maybe it's a bomb going off that's meant for the judge that sent Fisher to prison? Maybe it's the dead bodies that seem to appear after Fisher doesn't need their help any longer? Author Anthony Odom certainly keeps the reader on their toes while moving from one action adventure to another. Carl is concerned about his wife Julie who seems extremely happy as of late when she's been looking for new carpet. While Box tries to explain that she is just happy about getting new things for the house, Carl isn't buying it as he has this nagging feeling that something is wrong. You will want to read and find out about why Julie is so happy about selecting new carpet for the house. From beginning to end, this is a very well written and enjoyable book. 5 of 5 stars

How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Personal and Executive Coaching Business [With CDROM]
by
John N. Peragine and John Peragine and Kristie Lorette and Marylou Doehrman
godbyd
, August 20, 2012
This is a story of organized crime located in Kansas City, Missouri. While many may feel that the Mafia are long gone, author D.B. Reynolds in his book, "Network of Killers" leads the reader along paths that prove otherwise. There are many examples of the River Quay and the Teamsters and how these groups impacted the city life. The author also shows how the Galluccio family soon took control of many of many of the businesses in the area and dominated all that happened. The businesses that opposed them, they soon put out of operation, many in a very unfriendly way. There is the importance of standing with your family and what happens when one strays from the fold. The Mafia made their own rules and expected everyone else to follow them. They were inside the government and had many of the political figures in their pocket. There wasn't anything they couldn't do if they wanted to. They had an uncanny ability of turning thousands of dollars into millions through their way of conducting business. Perfection within their operation was expected and less than that often brought death. FBI agents were murdered and seeing that happen is a costly experience for one's life. Follow the author's trail as he leads the reader along many adventures found within the pages of this book. This is mature read as there are very lifelike examples of the Mafia which include: porn, prostitutes, murder, drugs, etc.... If you enjoy crime, action and a hint of mystery then you will enjoy this book. 4 of 5 stars

This is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. This is more than just a medical book giving health definitions, it is a story of a lady who has battled both of these illnesses and have found ways to make her life better in the midst of pain. We see in the beginning of the book that after living for a few weeks in a fog that the author was determined to get her life back. She made an appointment with the doctor and stated she was done with the pills and her physician stopped seeing her. One thing she learned was to not depend upon a doctor, rather she sat out to read, listen and learn more about what was going on within her body and found ways to try and improve the symptoms. Being positive and never giving in to the pain was paramount in finding ways to beat the intense level of pain. Chapters 7 - 11 are very helpful and insightful. It is here that she has some major transformations and begins to look beyond just the pain in search of something that would help her improve. She later declares that having these two issues within her life caused her to focus on what was really important in life. She has learned how to spend her time and energy wiser. Later in the book there are summaries and strategies given that are a great resource. The author also includes a place for the reader to write their own issues down. Having a journal and recording what is happening to the individual is so important in knowing what to do to bring about healing. There are also sections for: Medications and Supplements as well as a Resource Guide listing websites of help groups. This is a very well written and insightful book. it is easy to read and understand without getting bogged down in deep medical language. Amazing Grace as Christ Walks by: My Journey from Brokennness to Wholeness
by
Carol Cline
godbyd
, July 29, 2012
This is a very enjoyable and uplifting book by author Carol Cline. It describes the life of the author as well as her family members. There are many ups and downs throughout the journey but one that constantly points the reader toward God and His faithfulness. Carol discovers that she has cancer, but that doesn't cause her to give up, rather she presses through to victory. Her husband is lead to the Lord through events that causes him to see the faithfulness of God within the family. Carol describes the benefit of her church, groups that meet within her home and daily/weekly bible studies. She shares about her faith and how it grows throughout the course of her journey. Carol's dad is mentioned as well and his transformation that occurs as he faces death. This is a very encouraging portion, especially for anyone that is experiencing the soon loss of a loved one. Carol's husband Jim starts a new business and finds God's direction and blessings. Carol was raped and abused, but the reader will find throughout the book that she overcame that situation (to the best of her ability) and lives a joyous life reaching out to her family, loved ones, church, neighbors and others with a positive outlook. There is a section toward the end of the book called: "Spiritual Practices." This is where the author explains the difference between spirituality and religion. She gives great insight and use of scripture, also leading the reader up to the opportunity to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ if they so desire. I feel any reader who desires to learn more about Christ, overcoming battles, being strong in the midst of life's challenges and many other issues would benefit from reading this book. This book was provided by author Carol Cline for my personal and honest review. 5 of 5 stars
