Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Absolutely fantastic - an excellent read for fans of history, arms and armour, hunting, politics, and great commentary on the period from the period. Bloody, funny, and informative. Highly recommended.

Swords from the Desert
by
Harold Lamb

Come closer, and I will impart to you a little heresy... Harold Lamb is better than Robert E. Howard, when it comes to the historicals, anyway. Or, at least, I like him better. A quick read of his wikipedia page will tell you all you need to know about the historical accuracy of his stories, and the way he makes his characters who might be "other" into nuanced, human beings. What the wikipedia page won't tell you is how good these stories are - how they make you feel like you are ten years old again, hiding under the covers at night with a flashlight because you can't stop reading. Swords from the Desert is probably my favourite of these collections of Lamb's work, almost entirely because of Daril ibn Athir, the old soldier who has become a physician, but whose sword-work is still better than his needle-work. If you have to pick just one of the Bison collections, pick this one.
