Death by His Grace
by
Kwei Quartey
BlueJewel
, September 28, 2017
In Accra, Ghana, there is a brutal murder of a woman for cultural reasons. Inspector Darko Dawson's life goes through extreme stress as he works to find the killer along with his new partner, Mabel Safo. Since this mystery in the Darko Dawson mystery series involves a high amount of Charismatic religion, it is not problematic to write that Inspector Dawson's family along with himself are fighting with temptations and trials and definitely need support from the rest of the family. In this novel "Death By His Grace," by Kwei Quartey, there is the chance to explore Darko Dawson's feelings about every day life. His ideas about religion and the leaders, his ideas about Cannabis and his feelings about an older parent who has become a child again. Lastly, his role as a brother to Cairo, a quadriplegic. It is a mystery deeply involving an African family. It is about Mental IIlness, religious doctrines like speaking in Tongues, Demonology and how to handle infertility when two people desire a baby. Also, there is the chance to experience how far the human mind can fall as it ages. Jacob, the father, can not remember his son's name or their relationship. He asks for his wife who disappeared years and years ago as if she should walk in the door at any minute. He gets lost and becomes disheveled along the way.

My Italian Bulldozer
by
Alexander McCall Smith
BlueJewel
, September 25, 2017
Because of a bulldozer, it's absurd and delightful and loving. Paul, from Scotland, arrives in Italy. Little does he expect that transportation will become his major problem. Thank God for people who own and drive bulldozers. Also, thank goodness there are people who are willing to try something new. They aren't afraid to take a risk. Over and over I told myself this isn't a memoir it's a novel. I now desire a bulldozer for a Christmas gift. With that extravagant wish put aside, I have loved meeting Paul and his friends. At one point, he is a man with not a woman in sight. In the next moment, there are far too many ladies grabbing for his attention. Paul's heart is huge, and so he never can throw any one over. No matter how aggravating he finds something in a person to love and cherish. With unexpected misfortunes, he doesn't give up. He makes the best of every situation. Paul also knows not only about mushrooms he is able to gather the best from conversations. In "My Italian Bulldozer" by Alexander McCall Smith, the conversations are like vintage wine from Tuscany. I wanted to swirl the conversations in a wine goblet and sniff the richness of the grapes. Of course, there is Italy with its magic: Caravaggio, Montalcino and the Pisa. The novel is all about love whether it is given back in a package of your choosing or given back looking totally different from what you would ever expect. The Italians are friendly, and there is always salami, olives and best of all Art.

The Con Man's Daughter: A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God
by
Candice Curry
BlueJewel
, May 17, 2017
The Con Man's Daughter: A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God by Candice Curry is a sad family's true story. Candice Curry's father is like a child himself. In his daughter's eyes, he is very, very selfish. She spends most of her life striving to conquer the bad memories of her childhood. Once she grows up she takes on the battle of her step siblings. She wants to make sure that her father does not hurt another child in this life. As she struggles through many battles in life, she learns to walk in faith. God becomes the pilot of her life, her "Blessed Assurance" and her friend. I felt moved emotionally after reading how all, a big family, had left him totally alone. Obviously, he needed many prayers and a basket full of hope. Through all of these feelings, prayers, questions, Candice Curry became a wonderful mother and did not miss mentioning the miracles which took place in her life over and over again. I hope you have continued success and many blessings throughout your life. Thank you to Baker Books for a copy of the book.

Threads of Suspicion
by
Dee Henderson
BlueJewel
, May 15, 2017
Nine years ago in Chicago five women disappeared. Two detectives, Evie Blackwell and David Marshall, work together trying to find a solution to the above crime along with another crime involving a murdered detective who had been working on a case about an unfaithful spouse. Both cases have gone cold. Evie is working on the missing women, mainly a college student named Jenna. The cases begin to interweave which thickens the distasteful stew. It would seem like Evie and David would become romantic involved while working together. However, it never happens. As a matter of fact, neither thinks of romance because each are involved with other people. David is involved with Margaret called Maggie throughout the book. She is a very famous singer. Evie is involved with Rob. These cases are cold because six to nine years have past. The methods used by these detectives to solve these awful crimes are amazing. In "Threads Of Suspicion" by Dee Henderson, there is the added layer of Christian values. There is the feeling that the author definitely is a devout Christian. Still, she is able to write a hardcore detective novel. While it is a Christian or Inspirational novel, it is not too gentle or preachy. I especially liked the relationships between the four couples. While Rob and Evie seem to get along easily, there is a huge obstacle between Maggie and David. It is interesting to find out where their patience and love will take them.

The Kill Fee
by
Fiona Veitch Smith
BlueJewel
, January 19, 2017
It's a British Newspaper and a staff mixed up in the politics of Russia. There also are Royals and the famous Faberge eggs. All of this is found in "The Kill Fee" by Fiona Veitch Smith. During the Twentieth Century, there were the White Russians, the good guys, who sided with the British. There were also the Red Russians who wanted a new Russia where the people would have more control. It became very easy for me to learn and recognize the White Russians. It seemed much harder to keep up with the characters on the Red side. Thank goodness for the name chart at the front of the book. If there is any interest in Old Russia, the murders of Tsar Nicholas III and his Tsarina Alexandra and their family, you will like this mystery. Also, if there is any fascination with Rasputin and what happened to him is a reason to fly swiftly through all the pages.

The Prayer God Loves to Answer: Accessing Christ's Wisdom for Your Greatest Needs
by
Daniel Henderson
BlueJewel
, December 03, 2016
The wisdom of using God's wisdom is written about in Daniel Henderson's "The Prayer God Loves to Answer:..." It's been an easy, simple read about becoming a new and improved person while remodeling old relationships and making new relationships. After all, isn't life all about people whether we like them or not. I write that as a jest. I feel better equipped for prayer and trying again during another year to right my wrongs and trying not to fear reaching out to others near and far. I look forward to looking at other books by this author. For now, I know it's about "poetry."

Candle Day by Day Bible
by
Juliet David
BlueJewel
, November 28, 2016
The Day by Day Bible by Juliet David comes in the form of a calendar. The book is beautiful. Especially nice is the way a person can stand the calendar up. The calendar covers three hundred sixty-five days. The calendar is lightweight. There is printed material on both sides of the page. There are lovely illustrations.

Princess of the Wild Swans

, August 14, 2016
Princess of the Wild Swans by Diane Zahler is about hate and love in the land of fairy tales. I have loved reading this book so much. It took me away from the world of stress and worry. I have decided to read the rest of the series. The tale begins with a queen cursing her stepsons. She changes the boys to swans. Their sister, the Princess, is heartbroken. Finally, there is a way to turn the curse. She must sew shirts of stinging nettles for each brother. Her hands become ugly and sore.

Dressed for Death
by
Julianna Deering
BlueJewel
, March 07, 2016
In Dressed - for - Death by Julianna Deering, there is a Regency masquerade party given at the Cummins' home. At their Winteroak House, there is fun and danger during that time. The party goers are dressed in Regency period costumes. This brings up the subject of literature during their conversations. Jane Austen's novels Emma, Pride And Prejudice and Mansfield Park are discussed along with the poems of Byron. Cotillions and Quadrilles are danced and romance is in the air along with the presence of a protective mother, Mrs. Cummins, Doctor Cummins' wife. Usually, I don't introduce characters in the first paragraph of a book review. This time I wanted to do it. The Christian mystery is definitely character driven. There is this one home where a murder takes place and serious, criminal activity happens. I liked the setting as described above because it reminded me of an Agatha Christie murder party. An overdosed woman's manic actions took me by surprise.

The Body Under the Bridge
by
Paul McCusker
BlueJewel
, February 15, 2016
The Body Under The Bridge by Paul McCusker is a church mystery far different from other church mysteries I've read in the past. In this one, Father Gilbert of Saint Mark's has a disturbing dream. In the dream, a man hangs himself. Then, in real life the same situation occurs involving Colin Doyle. His wife comes home to find her husband hanging. It is impossible to drag him down from the rope. In the dream, there is also the foot of a body found. Someone must have drowned the body or brought the body to its present place dead already. The body is two hundred years old. These mysterious incidents will connect. There is a feud of two families from the past. Anyway, the novel took me back and forth in history to the present while following a "bog body."

Coincidences
by
Maria Savva
BlueJewel
, September 13, 2012
In London during the summer of 1997 there is a huge drama taking place in a family. This family drama proves that the past never disappears like a mirage on a highway. The past follows behind us like a shadow. It affects our present and future. Alice know this fact better than most people. All of a sudden she finds herself unable to walk in her present or future until she deals with the past. Stephanie, the closest person to her, tells her how to find her father. Most of the truth lies with her father and his wife. It is difficult to write about this emotional novel because I don't want to give spoilers. Around every corner there is a new surprise for Alice. All of a sudden it seems like every person close to her has lied to her and kept secrets from her. All of a sudden all close relationships are questionable. This important novel brings up issues like surrogacy. It's been years since I've heard much about parental surrogacy. This book made me aware of the ins and outs of the issue again. From reading Alice's story and meeting Stephanie, Ken and Miranda and Rita I learned that it's better to tell the truth than to lie. The truth can hurt us. However, lying to protect ourselves or other people is far more painful than honesty. It takes courage to tell the truth. I have learned while reading COINCIDENCES by Maria Savva to make truth telling my aim no matter how many friends or relatives I might lose along the way. It is the best way for all involved. In the end Alice and Jane became richer for the experience gained as I have become richer by reading about these characters.mariasavva
