Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Brilliant comic writing, absurdly funny, made me smile. My favorite Wodehouse so far.

Post Office Girl
by
Stefan Zweig

The first 32 pages about Christine's daily grind at the post office is one of the best I've read, with its beautiful writing of Christine as an unhappy and bored clerk and the impressive descriptions of her work environment. As a reader you feel as stuck as Christine, you feel the monotonous of her work. It is brilliant. I was totally engrossed. I loved the depth and elegance of his writing, as if dreamlike but yet so real.

Selected Stories
by
Stefan Zweig

I have read Zweig's other works, paticularly the ones that NYRB had republished, but this selection of his short stories is a great introduction to any interested reader and a book I will re-read. My favorite stories from this collection are Letter from an Unknown Woman, Invisible Collection, and Buchmendel. Pushkin Press also has many other reprints of his other short stories. I always love the intensity of his stories, the fluidity of his writing, even though they are often incredibly heartbreaking.
