Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Calculated in Death
by
J. D. Robb
cccleveland
, August 06, 2013
Though a very good book the ending was a let down. Robb deviates from the behaviorisms we have learned to love and expect from the main character turning what was, in my opinion a five star read into a four star read with just a few pages. It felt rushed and not altogether thought out. That said the book still deserves four stars for the suspense, the laughs, and interesting plot line.

Love Child

Interesting but difficult to get in to. Once I became fully engaged in the story and the main character, the story shifted into a storyline that was less intriguing. Though not one of my favorites it is still worth reading, especially while sitting poolside.

Glass Room

One of the best books I have ever read, if not the very best. This book makes you feel a gauntlet of emotions. Though a fairly quick read you cannot give up on the book. At times I felt the book to progress rather slowly; but, looking back on it now I feel as though this feeling was due to my own preconceived perception of how the book would progress. Now I feel every word was there for a reason.

Excellent read that opens your mind to the extent in which virginity is being used to keep women "in their place".

Eighteen Acres
by
Nicolle Wallace
cccleveland
, March 13, 2013
For all those liberals out there do not be dismayed by Nicolle Wallace being a key figure in the McCain/Palin ticket. As a fellow liberal there was only one or two instances where there was a whisper of partisan ideology. That aside this book was a fantastic read for all those who enjoy a good story line and politics.

Essential Feminist Reader
by
Estelle Freedman
cccleveland
, March 09, 2013
This book is essential to understanding the first, second and third wave feminist movement. This book is filled with important women who contributed to the movement and the writings they put forth to stimulate the mind and make you reconsider how you view the world. Works include Simone de Beauvoir's "The Second Sex" Henrik Ibsen "The Doll House", Susan B Anthony "Social Purity", and of course an excerpt from Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" are just a few of the writings you get to explore. Reading this book changes how you look at the world and forces you to think of concepts that you had never considered before. For anyone who was ever interested in feminism this is THE book to begin your education into the movement.
