Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. A Discovery of Witches: All Souls 1

By far the best novel I read last year. It was so good I could not spare a moment to sleep. The characters are well developed and intriguing; and the story line is refreshing, in that it pulls in so much history. I have read others who have attempted to pull this off, but Deborah Harkness is the first to pull it off.

Shadow of Night: All Souls Trilogy 2

I am giving this a three because of how fantastic the first book was. I counted down the days until this book was released, because the first one was so fantastic. Unfortunately the second book of the three part series did not live up to the success of the first. That said, it was still a really good book.

In the Lake of the Woods

A disturbing and complex book that captures the reader in a psychological thriller. The best or worst part of this book, depending on your view, is the readers opportunity to explore their own conclusion. I loved that I could look at all the evidence and make my own determination on what happened. The violence involved in this book was, at times, difficult to read; but, it is there for a purpose.

Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction 50 North American Stories Since 1970

I had to purchase this book for a Lit class and was not very enthused about it. Though I am an avid reader, I had never previously enjoyed short stories. After reading this book I have discovered how wonderful short stories are, and realized my distaste for them was solely based on the crap I had to read in high school. There are numerous stories in this book that I love, but the one I cannot stop raving about is "Silver Water" by Amy Bloom. Told from the point of view of the sister whose witness to her sisters psychotic breaks and the institutions who treated her sister. It is beautiful and disturbing at the same time, and completely captures the world that patients and families become swallowed in.

Divinity of Dogs True Stories of Miracles Inspired by Mans Best Friend

Extremely disappointed with this book. I had such high hopes when I turned to the first page, but almost every story was a massive letdown. The only exception to this was part of the story of the dog "Little Bit" who attempted to protect its owner from seizures and abusive relationships while the rest fell short. Most of these stories were boring; I have a great respect for the power dogs have in our lives. They can absolutely change the way we look at life, and the direction in which we are going; that said most of these stories came off as a delusional interpretation of events, loosely bound together to make what, on the surface, looks like a semi-rational thought.

Secret Lives of the First Ladies What Your Teachers Never Told You about the Women of the White House

A fun look into our history. A very basic overview of our countries first ladies, but it gives you interesting and fun facts you've never herd of before and gives you enough information to spike your interest. It reads almost like mindless entertainment.

To Kill a Mockingbird

It had been over ten years since the last time I read this book, and it is just as amazing as when I was a child reading it for the first time. Though I did not realize it then, this book, at the very least, set in stone certain ideals about fairness, understanding and advocacy. Atticus helped raise me.

I had a certain amount of respect for Hillary Clinton before I read her book, but afterwords I have realized I have not given the respect that is due. A surprisingly easy read that gives you a detailed account of her perspective.

My favorite series I've ever read. I've read the whole series at least five times through and it is always fantastic.
