Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Madeline's Prayer

Madeline's Prayer is a resonant book--spiritual without being religious. It left me feeling good about the ending for days. No sex, no violence, just a good plot and a great ending, lots of humor, and three unforgettable characters. The book is cleverly written from three points of view, and each authentically captures the essence of a woman of a certain age and experience. It is wise and entertaining, and contains a great problem-solving technique that I'm using in my life right now. A very good read indeed.

Nuclear Waste in Your Backyard: Who's to Blame and How to Fix It
by

I recommend that every member of the new Congress, Republican and Democrat, read this book for the legislative recommendations to get the country moving again on nuclear waste policy. We need to be able to build centralized spent nuclear fuel storage facilities to take this burden from the shutdown and operating nuclear power plants. Though storage of nuclear fuel poses no immediate danger to communities near the plants, the spent nuclear fuel cannot be stored at these sites indefinitely as currently recommended by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. With Senator Reid sidelined, the new Congress could use these recommendations to break the political stalemate that has existed for far too long regarding rebuilding a nuclear waste program. Now you can implement the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future. This book is a must-read for politicians and the public who care about energy policy, nuclear energy, and mitigating climate change.
