Dizz Tate: Books That Made Me Want to Write: Dizz Tate’s Bookshelf for Brutes (0 comment)
When I was writing my book, Brutes, there came a point where I wanted to be thinking about it even when I was so tired of it I couldn’t bear to look at it anymore. I was also terrified of leaving it alone, like the book would forget me if I stopped reminding it I was there...

    True Love by Jude Deveraux
    selective reader, June 06, 2018
I loved it! A fascinating story that includes plenty of romance, family history and a ghost. This is just the kind of things you expect to find in a Jude Deveraux book. This author is well known for her strong characters and interesting story lines that keep you reading well into the night. A great start for this first book in the newest trilogy. A must read for your summer reading list that I highly recommend.

Table for Five by Susan Wiggs
    selective reader, April 11, 2018
Susan Wiggs has done it again. A devastating event that changes the lives of the main characters in many different ways by the end of the book. A great story that I could not put down. This author is all about the human heart and looking inside yourself so that you do what's right for yourself and those closest to you. It's about stepping up and doing what's necessary in a time of need. Love is the center of the whole thing and it's all that matters. Fabulous!

Julia Quinn is the best historical writer I have ever read. If you like a writer who adds a sharp wit that will keep you reading and put you in that great mood from all the laughter then this book is for you. This is the first book of two. Check out this and any other title by this author. You will be glad you did. Highly recommended!

    selective reader, October 09, 2017
A very fun Romantic Suspense. A fast read for me that I finished in about 3 days. I have not read much by this author but I really do enjoy this genre of her books. The story contained very creative characters and a storyline that kept me wanting to keep reading. There were also some surprises along the way to peak your interest. Wonderful Story. Book #1 the Trilogy. Plan to read the rest of the books in the series. Recommended.

Knit One Kill Two by Maggie Sefton
    selective reader, August 12, 2017
Mysteries make up a large portion of my reading time. I especially like the ones that feature the amateur sleuths. This had a slow start but once it got going it really took off. You don't have to be a knitter to enjoy this one and there's plenty of humor for everyone. A great book for your summer reading list.

Unexpected Consequences of Love by Jill Mansell
    selective reader, August 12, 2017
Amazingly Hilarious author. Jill Mansell is one of my all time favorite authors when you want to read a really funny book. English authors have a different writing style than American authors as well as the super creative ways in which they place their characters. This is my go to author for some laugh out loud humor anytime at all. Highly recommended!

Legacy of Eden by Nelle Davy
    selective reader, August 12, 2017
Wow! What a great first book by this author. A family history book that spans several generations. A multi-layered story with a full cast of characters. This is not your typical predictable fiction story. This has so much detail and so many characters that you want to take your time in order to capture all the details. Some parts I had to reread a couple times. A story that this worth your time and effort and so different than anything I have read in a long time. A must read summer pick.

Lead with Your Heart Lessons from a Life with Horses Finding Wholeness & Harmony at the End of a Lead Rope by Allan J Hamilton
    selective reader, April 05, 2017
A very unique book if you are looking for something great but different to read. My local library does a fun event called Blind Date with a Book a few times a year. They are wrapped so the only thing you know is the Genre. I found a great pick here especially since I love animal stories. This would be a great book for anyone whether you are a horse owner or not. It contains some useful information that many will find of value.

Secret to Hummingbird Cake by Celeste Fletcher McHale

A great new southern writer. This beautiful cover and fun sounding title are what attracted me to this book in the first place. Once I read what it was about I knew I would have to read it. Southern writers are some of my favorites because they tend to be very creative with their word choices. I like a good novel with plenty of funny parts and this one did not disappoint.

The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco by Laura A. H. Disilverio
    selective reader, September 15, 2015
I really liked this book a lot. The writer had a fresh new twist for mystery fiction. The mix of characters were so different from one another as well as very believable. Add in a little romance and a surprise ending and you have the right combination for a truly interesting read. The writing was easy and fun while at the same time drew me in and held me there until all was said and done. I look forward to reading book 2 of this series when it comes out later this year.

Abundance of Katherines by John Green

I loved this book. I have read almost all of John Green's books and have liked them all. This one is my favorites so far. The author pulls you in from the beginning and doesn't let go until the very last page is turned. It includes some very realistic characters which makes for an enjoyable read whether you are a young adult or adult. Another plus is that Mr. Green includes some tips for young writer's in a question and answer section at the end of the book. Highly recommended.

Girl in the Dark: A Memoir by Lyndsey, Anna
    selective reader, July 30, 2015
I always enjoy a great biography and especially one written by someone who is not famous. This a wonderfully detailed and well written true story of the author's experience and many challenges she faced due to extreme light sensitivity. This is a story that has really stayed with me well beyond finishing the book. It has forced me to question what I would do and how I would survive. I have also wondered who I would include on my list of supporters that I could lean on in my time of need. This is by far the best biography I have read this year.

    Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion
    selective reader, July 22, 2015
Excellent! Serious, quirky and humorous all at the same time. The prose is the same as in the first book but the adventure has changed. It will be interesting to see how the story progresses as time goes on. The author gives us good insight into the world of people who think differently than most of us especially when facing major challenges in our lives. We learn the importance of having patience with those we love and making real efforts to repair loss connections with each other. Is Don up to the challenge of fatherhood? Read this book to find out! If you enjoyed the first book, you should read this sequel. I hope to see a third book in the series.

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

I have just finished reading Go Set a Watchman. I think this book is Amazing! Harper Lee has created a story about a difficult subject matter that draws you in due to her poetic writing style and very likeable characters. The story takes place many years after To Kill a Mockingbird. It doesn't really matter whether you think of this as a sequel or not. The important thing is that you enjoyed reading the story. Reading is simply for entertainment purposes. If you liked the book and found value in the story than the author did her job. I highly recommend this book.

They are related stories about grief and loss but also contain some very funny lines to keep you well entertained. The last five are a mixture of unrelated stores that though not nearly as humorous as the first three will be worth your time to continue reading. With a fast pace to keep you reading until all of those unanswered questions have been uncovered as well as a few surprises along the way so that it's fresh and exciting all the way to the end.

    Secret Place by Tana French
    selective reader, February 06, 2015
I just finished reading The Secret Place - the most recent book by Tana French. I could not wait to read this one after reading her first book In The Woods. While these are both in the same series it is not absolutely essential to read them in order. The author uses different characters to keep it fresh while still including one or two from her previous books. I really enjoy her writing style and how she switches back between the two narrators of her stories. A good book to get lost in and keep you reading well into the night. Will read one of her other books in the series next.

    selective reader, December 08, 2014
This is my second book from the Bailey Ruth Ghost series but it wont be my last. It is so full of fun and laughter as well as rule breaking that make for a very enjoyable read. I love ghost novels and this one was no exception. As you would expect from a good ghost novel you will find ghosts walking through locked doors as well as items floating around on their own etc. I will definitely be checking out more books from this author very soon. If ghost novels are your thing then this book is for you.

I just finished reading this amazingly good book by Elin Hilderbrand. As one of my favorite writers I was excited to learn she had written a new book for the Holidays. Once again her setting for the book is Nantucket. This book has many likeable characters and will help put you in the mood to capture that holiday spirit. If you are looking for a good new holiday read this is it.

Top Secret Twenty-One was a very captivating read. Janet Evanovich can always be counted on for a good laugh especially for those books in her Stephanie Plumb Series. This author's writing just gets better and better with the characters becoming more developed the longer the series continues. I look forward to reading the next one in the series. The Silkworm: Cormoran Strike 2 by Robert Galbraith
    selective reader, September 02, 2014
I enjoyed this book very much. I have not read The Harry Potter Series and because of that came to this book with a fresh attitude without that prior knowledge of comparison. The writing I found to be very well done. I enjoyed reading this mystery book because a lot of the characters here are flawed in some way including the main character. I tend to enjoy books more when the characters are flawed in some way just like real people. It somehow makes the characters easier to relate to.

This is without a doubt the best book I have read so far in 2014. Instructions for a Heatwave is Maggie O'Farrell at her very best. I am a huge Maggie O'Farrell fan and can hardly wait when I find out she has a new release. I have read several books by this author and have never been disappointed as she is a very descriptive writer. Her stories include dysfunctional families brought together to uncover a hidden family secret. A page turner that you will lose sleep over until the last page is turned. A Must Read! Gillian Flynn has a definite page turner in the Gone Girl. This is a little different than her two previous novels. In this book she flips back and forth between two different narrators to give two different points of view. The two narrators are the two main characters of the book. It makes for an interesting book that will keep you reading well into the night. This is in no way a predictable story. There are plenty of surprises and lots of excitement to be found here. Nora Roberts is one of my favorite writers of all time! Blue Dahlia is book 1 of the "In the garden" series. There are some very strong characters here. The main focus of this book is on flowers and gardening as well as some romance thrown into the mix. There is also the mystery of trying to uncover the identity of a ghost who haunts the Harper Estate who is known only as the Harper Bride. This is definitely a ghost with an attitude! If you love a good ghost story and a mystery, I recommend this book.

Grain Brain The Surprising Truth about Wheat Carbs & Sugar Your Brains Silent Killers by David Perlmutter, Kristin Loberg
    selective reader, March 03, 2014
I give this book a top score. I must eat a gluten free diet due to an irritating intolerance to wheat that is not Celiac. Should I choose to eat wheat it irritates my intestinal track, I suffer with stomaches, I get skin rashes, brain fog, sleep disturbances. I personally eat a low grain diet due to a yeast issue and I have to say that when you swap out wheat for healthier choices it such as healthy protein, fruits, veggies and small amounts of gluten free grains such as brown rice bread and quinoa you just feel better and kids act nicer. My teenage son would rather eat quinoa which is an indian grain with a nutty taste than he would steamed brown rice. We eat a meal of quinoa and beans plus another healthy vegetable sometimes and my teenage boys clean their plates. My boys eat oatmeal instead of a wheat based cereal for breakfast or eggs. The more you eat the healtier options the less your body craves the unhealthy carbs. It's about time the medical community caught up with how unhealthy it is to eat so many carbs instead of more healthy options. Way to go David Permutter! I can't wait for the cookbook which comes out in the fall 2014.

This is a Great book! Bill O'Reilly does an excellent job as narrator of this book informing us of what was going on in our country leading up to Lincoln's Assassination. I like how he includes a lot of background info of not only Lincoln and his Wife but also all of the people who were associated with the Assassination. You do not have to be a history buff to enjoy this audio book. Lincoln has always facinated me and this book did not disappoint. A great listen or if you are not an audio book listener you can buy the hardcover verion. A Highly Reccommended Book!

Casual Vacancy by J K Rowling
    selective reader, January 30, 2013
I did not like this book very much. It was my first expeerience with J K Rowling. I never read any of the Harry Potter series so it was as if she was a new author to me. I chose the audio version as I thought it would be hard to get through the actual book. I was especially disappointed with this because there were so many 'F' words and I felt this may have been a better book without them. There was a lot of disfunction to the story. I also did not feel there were any really likeable characters that I could relate to. Despite all this I did finish the book and was really surprised by how the author chose to end the story.

A wonderful book! This book is by far the best book I have read this year. The author grabs hold of you and draws you in from the very beginning and does not let go until you have turned the very last page. It is the type of book that makes you feel sad when you get to the end because you loved it so much you wish it would never end. I recommended it to one other person so far and she loved it as well. If you have Christmas money to spend or just looking for something new to read - you should buy this book as you will be glad you did because it is money well spent.
