Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Not bad. A little to rom-com-y for me but not horrible.

I'm not one to tell someone how or what to read but if you're a fan of Bukowksi's novels and bout reading the collections of his letters you're doing something wrong.

I really enjoyed this book. It's an odd weaving through true crime and memoir. Great though. It made me a little depressed, I think. It definitely made me want to do drugs.

A very inventive coming-of-age tale. Subversive where others may be sentimental. Quick pace makes it a very quick and energetic read. I look forward to seeing how Jackson's voice emerges in his future works.

Questionable Shape
by
Bennett Sims
James Taone

The last word I wanted to use while talking about this book, that focuses on the undead, is "realistic" but I can't help it. It's a testament to Bennett's writing that these characters are so relatable. Even the undead. It's as much a coming-of-age tale, told by a narrator's flashbacks, as it is a "zombie" book. It is more about relationships than it is about surviving an epidemic. The writing is so amazing that it can intertwine three different themes seamlessly. Don't compare this to other "zombie" or "apocalyptic" books you read this year, compare it to EVERY book you read this year. I'd be willing to bet it cracks the top 5.

Simply beautiful. A wonderful web of flashbacks that show the beauty and brutality of families fighting to survive during the bleakest conditions two separate wars could throw at them. Amazing!!!

Lifespan of a Fact
by
John Dagata, Jim Fingal

This book is amazing. I don't know that I should actually be calling it a book but I digress. Do you ever stop to think if Cheryl was actually wearing shorts instead of jeans in your favorite story to tell about her? Or that it was Coors Light not Bud Light in the keg that Trevor did a keg stand on? Do these factual missteps make your story any less real/funny/important? I think John D'Agata sums it up brilliantly in an argument (discussion?) he has with Jim Fingal, in the book, in which he says: "At some point the reader needs to stop demanding that they be spoon-fed like infants and start figuring out on their own how to deal with art that they disagree with--and how to do so without throwing a fucking temper tantrum or banning that art from ever appearing again." This book begins by approaching teen suicide. Tough to take on for anyone. In the midst of it there is a struggle between writer and fact-checker to make sure they're doing their job. It seems trifling at times and may be, but through it all I'll never forget the story about Levi Presley while the debate of essay vs. fiction vs. non-fiction rages on.

The characters in this book are amazing. I think Uncle Nathan alone earns a five star rating. I think it's a great coming-of-age story that revels in the naivety of the young. It also is told from a point of view where all one wishes is to relive, if even for a second, the same naivety of their younger selves. Also, there's a fried chicken recipe... So...

Amazing?! A whirlwind to say to the least. If Kafka were a teen slut vampire junkie he'd have written this novel. The narrative is jumpy and dislodged but it all makes sense in the context. This is "The Lost Boys" if they loved to party. Just so good.
