Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. One Step Behind
by
Henning Mankell

There is something in the way that Mankell begins one of his Wallander investigations that keeps me coming back to his books again and again. One Step Behind is a story of young people who are participating in something of a summer solstice, when they are murdered. Wallander investigates with his usual instincts guiding him. I love how he is a real human being with his flaws yet he is still the best at what he does. If readers like the trilogy of the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, then they will love this mystery!

Team of Rivals The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
by
Doris Kearns Goodwin

I love the way that Doris Kearnes Goodwin writes in detail about all of the political rivals alive at the time of Lincoln as he comes into his own as a candidate. He seemed like such an unlikely candidate to win and yet when he does win, he is not afraid to place some of the men who disagreed with him into his cabinet. He relies on advice and the words of others but he is definitely his own man and makes his own decisions. Now, after reading this amazing book, I'm left wondering, what could Lincoln have done to bring the country together after the Civil War. Like all good leaders, he brought the country together to defeat slavery but there was so much more that would have been done after the war to bring the economy of the south together along with rebuilding the south. This is much the way I have felt for a long time wondering what John F. Kennedy would have been able to do to end the Vietnam War sooner. I was 9 years old and lived in Bethesda, Maryland right outside D.C. when we were told to go home early that November afternoon because the president had been shot. I'll never forget walking up the street where everyone's mom met them crying on that grey day to usher their children into the houses. Reading about Lincoln dying made me cry when I think of losing this great leader!
