Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
by
Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson is a wonderful storyteller and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of his greatest. He explores the idea of the two sides of human nature in a constant struggle for control. One part of the psyche strives to be compassionate of others and philanthropic in nature. The other self works only to fulfil baser needs of self-indulgence, of lasciviousness, greed and unrestrained rage. Dr. Jekyll seeks to unveil this other unwholesome self, thinking that this is possible without scarring the part of himself he considers to be good. I have read this book many times and still find it to be a very compelling study of the struggles humans face as we rank ourselves on that good/bad scale.

Eye In The Sky
by
Philip K Dick

Each of us live in our own world, the world we create in our mind based on environment, experience, even the very chemical and electrical make up of our nervous system. What kind of world would each of us create if we had the power? What would happen if an accidental exposure to some type of particle beam gave one of us, the one most awake and aware, the ability to create the world our mind truly believes exists, based on ignorant beliefs or neurotic phobias? And what if everyone else were forced to live in that nightmare with them? These are the circumstances Philip K. Dick explores in Eye in the Sky. A great read.

Kobo Arc 16GB

I have a Kobo Mini that I love. It is the first eReader that I have purchased, and I am very happy with it. I plan to purchase another Kobo eReader, hopefully an Arc or an Aura, due to the quality of the product itself, the company's willingness to support independent publishing, and the fact that they provide competition for Apple and other mega companies. Thanks, Kobo

House Of The Seven Gables
by
Nathaniel Hawthorne

I read The House of Seven Gables as a youngster. When I reread it again recently I realize why it affected me so as a child. It takes on the idea of how one person's mistakes follow future generations like a dark shadow. I love gothic novels.
