Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion is only, and I say only, for diehard Tolkien fans. Reading this tome is akin to reading a textbook, but for the enthusiast, it is essentially the reading of a text of the height of Tolkien nerd-dom. Mind you, this is a pre-history of the Middle Earth world which so many fans have loved and even grew up on. This is decidedly not a Middle Earth story, rather, The Silmarillion is a sober history of stories which established both the advent of the Elves and the Edain, yet is filled with histories which the Tolkien fan must add to their library.

Hobbit Peter Sis Cover

Honestly, what can be said about The Hobbit other than it is a perennial classic, and personally is the first book I read as a child which truly inspired my love of reading and of fantasy. It is light, humorous, engrossing, and quick, an excellent bedtime book. I don't mention this just because of the release of the film, but it doesn't hurt to bring people to the book who never have lost themselves in it. It is a dangerous gateway book to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and for those so inclined, deeper tomes like The Silmarillion. Also, reading The Hobbit aloud to children is a rare treat, or to friends when you are in an, um, altered state. If you have never read this delightful classic fantasy, do yourself the favor of grabbing it off the rack at Powell's.
