Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I am so glad I picked this book up on a whim. It gave me insight to the life of a young Iranian girl and the hardships she faced throughout her life. Watching the main character grow up and make her choices made me think a lot about our fate and the question of whether we determine our own fate or if it is already set in stone.

I loved this book and will read it many times over. There are so many things to learn from this young girl's insights and it is so powerful. After reading it, I am always left in wonder at how this girl can remain so positive in such a dreadful time as World War II.

White Fang Scholastic Classics
by
Jack London

I am on break from college, and I get to choose a book to read of MY choice for once. I am surfing around the web to find a book and suddenly, White Fang by Jack London "calls" to me. I cannot resist the Call. This book is so fantastic....I can't even imagine writing from the perspective of an animal rather than a human, and it's what sets London's writing apart from other authors. You truly feel like you are in the wilderness with his descriptions, but he manages not to overdo it. I also find myself so engrossed in the story that it is difficult to transition to normal human life when I must stop. It caused me to deeply think about how certain people's behavior today has so much to do with their upbringing, since White Fang's actions are largely influenced by his upbringing. Like I said, it's an amazing book and I recommend this book for everyone, adults and children (probably best for 13+).
