Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Goddess Pose The Audacious Life of Indra Devi the Woman Who Helped Bring Yoga to the West by Michelle Goldberg
    shobasatya, July 26, 2015
You have a yoga story. I have a yoga story. We all have a yoga story. But even those of us who think we know the story of yoga, even those of us who lived through the 60's and beyond, still don't know the real story. This is the hidden history of a whole century through the yoga's lens. It starts with the Russian revolution, spends delicious years with the Raj in colonial India, with Madam Blavatsky, Krishnamurti, a royal wedding in the Palace of Mysore and the movement for Indian independence. Michelle Goldberg brings her considerable journalistic skills and experience to enlighten us through the life of the bohemian Russian aristocrat who studied with the great yogis of India and became an engine of yoga in America. Reading this book is like reading your grandparents secret love letters; it makes surprising connections that make everything in our present world make sense. It's an elegant satisfying read.

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice On Love & Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed
    shobasatya, January 01, 2013
Everybody I hear talk about this book says that they laughed and cried. It is true. But more than that I wept and laughed for the deep heart in all of us that unites us in the sweetness and sorrow of living a life. The spiritual relief of reading this book healed me. Seriously, I read it again and again...and give it to my dearest friends to read too.
