Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Admission
by

Before the beginning of each chapter is a fictional essay from a fictional applicant to Princeton. Even though I'm from NJ ,Princeton was way off of my radar,I think I know one person who attended. But those admission essays are cringe-worthy..I know I wrote some such babble myself. Some insight about the admission process and Princeton are provided (maybe it's all fiction but seems real). As entertaining as those tidbits are,it's the story that made me love this book. Each chapter held a surprise and twist in the life of admissions officer Portia-what next will happen???. It amuses me,too, when chapters have titles.

My Boring Ass Life The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith
by
Kevin Smith

Wake up every morning to let the dogs out, enjoy your sit on the toilet. I was reading a boring-ass life-but then it sucked me in. I wanted to know more about Kevin Smith,so I watched him on YouTube and checked out his web pages. Seeing and hearing his stories made reading the book more interesting. He's funny.

I don't remember how I got turned on to Haruki Murakami-but I'm so glad that it happened. I've sought out his other books and short stories. I actually paid full price for this book at the airport because I couldn't wait to dig in. This was no short story. It took me a solid, exciting month of bedtime reading to finish. I love how Murakami references rock music- Tengo wearing a Jeff Beck tee shirt.I love his style and his story. Let the story unfold-no synopsis from me. I love this line "A person learns how to love himself throught the simple acts of loving and being loved by someone else". A wonderful book from a masterful writer.

I hated this book. Then I read it again to see if I was missing something-but still found it annoying. I think I was more frustrated than the characters.

We Were The Mulvaneys
by
Joyce Carol Oates

What a wonderful book! I've only read a few "Oprah books". I've read a few Joyce Carol Oates books. I thought I'd had enough of both. I couldn't get enough of this book.I wanted to hang out with the Mulvaneys during their good times and shake them out of their bad times. When an engrossing book collapses at the end it really annoys me- I had no reason to be annoyed at the reunion at the end of this book. It's all good.

Lost City Radio

As much as I love David Letterman,I hate falling asleep on the sofa waiting the see the musical guest.I need a book that draws me into my cozy bed with my reading glasses -every night.I read "Lost City Radio" slowly,so I could savor and enjoy as long as possible. I like a book that has a few words that I turn to the dictionary for.And enjoy being delighted to find that the unknown word is a perfect word. Who to pass this book along to? My sister who recently visited Lima? My senior friend who enjoys reading history and politics? My neighbor who spent part of her childhood in South America? My best friend who just got dumped by her boyfriend? My co-worker who gave me "The Shadow of the Wind" to read? My lover who likes to read Nelson DeMille and Harlan Coben? My buddy active in the ACLU? I'll share it with all of them.
