A Little Life

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara This extremely well written novel is a fantastic read. It certainly stands in a class by itself in the category of long-time friends, four young men in their journey from college to fifty-somethings. Jude, the central character is haunted by the question “What If . . .” as he finds it impossible to talk about childhood and adolescence. The author has skillfully accomplished the task of transporting a reader into lives and situations that are unlike anything they may have encountered in their own experience. Expect to have this book fill your thoughts long after you have finished the last page.

The Room

The Room by Jonas Karlsson Who can unlock the mysteries of the mind? Jonas Karlsson doesn't solve the mystery but presents a compelling novel that will engage a reader from the first page. If the cover of the book doesn't entice, the text of this one-of-a-kind book will. Bjorn, the protagonist, takes a new job and sets about to distinguish himself --- and he most definitely does that!! Evidence: His superior breaks out in a sweat in an attempt to understand the behaviors of Bjorn and his co-workers. Is there a conspiracy or not? You will not regret purchasing this book -- guaranteed. It is one you will recommend to your friends partially because you not only cannot stop thinking about it but also you will be in awe of the author's skill in taking control of your mind in a novel so spare and concise. Definitely deserves an A+.

Spool of Blue Thread
by
Anne Tyler

Run right out and buy this book! You will lose yourself in its pages and won't want it to end. Anne Tyler, a treasure of American authors, is a storyteller par excellence. Her twentieth novel, expectedly, does not disappoint. A Spool of Blue Thread is crafted in a way that the reader becomes well acquainted with the members of the Whitshank family so smoothly that you "know" them, perhaps better than they know themselves. Ms. Tyler takes the threads of each personal story and weaves them into the family community from past to present and back again. Within each of the four sections, we smile, laugh, and ponder the strengths and even weaknesses of each character as each person's being interlocks with all the others in a dynamic that displays a writer's genius and depth. Bravo!!

Summer House with Swimming Pool
by
Herman Koch

What a book!! First you notice the cover: a physician's prescription pad with the notation "Summer House with Swimming Pool." Intriguing --- but not a fraction of the intrigue you will experience when you begin to read!! Captivating, engrossing, inventive, polished, enthralling --- all of these apply. I can't imagine anyone who isn't spellbound as you first meet the general practitioner, then one-by-one his family and patients. The reader is drawn into a drama that leaves you breathless with its twists and turns, all seen through the eyes of the doctor who is a husband, father, and someone who has a bizarre philosophy of his professional role. Guaranteed to be consumed with the same anticipation you would have to receive an invitation to a summer house with swimming pool.
