Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Warmth Of Other Suns: The Epic Story Of America's Great Migration
by
Isabel Wilkerson
seatower
, January 31, 2013
An incredibly well-written, spell-binding book. The author, Isabel Wilkerson spent years researching and thousands of hours interviewing people nationwide in order to write this excellent non-fiction book. The migrations played a major part in our national demography and everyone should be aware of this historical anomaly. History, personal memoirs, and an understanding of the interconnectedness of all human beings are treasures this book lends to all readers.

Savage Inequalities Children in Americas Schools
by
Jonathan Kozol
seatower
, January 18, 2013
This book was required reading for an undergradate class I took as a bilingual education major and I am forever grateful to the professor for assigning it. Jonathan Kozol has spent his lifetime as a student advocate (as teacher and author) and stalwart supporter of PUBLIC EDUCATION in the U.S. It took several years to get this book published due to what many asserted was controversial material: it revealed the contemptuous inequality of educational opportunities in communities in the Midwest that exemplified what was (and continues to be) practiced nationwide. There are several passages that brought me to tears and I will forever hold the heartbreaking images of so many children victimized by the perpetuation (and acceleration) of poverty in our nation. Corporatization of public education to "Fix" education across the country (thus making it a huge profit-making machine for private corporations)as demonstrated by "No Child Left Behind" and now "Race to the Top" with their attendant multi-million dollar testing schemes is abominable. Add to that the villification of dedicated teachers that are woefully underpaid and unrecognized for their commitment to their profession and their students and a disastrous formula that corrupts and undermines public education(and access to quality education nationwide)is created. Another must-read for anyone interested in the future of our children across the nation! Kozol's writing is riveting!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot
seatower
, January 18, 2013
This is one of the BEST books I have ever read...consummately informative, heartrending, thought-provoking, and a veritable page turner. The backstory of the long, complicated process that Rebecca Skloot endured to effectuate the publishing of this book is a testament to her commitment to bringing to light the monumental contribution of Henrietta Lacks to humankind, science and medicine around the world. It is the "Common Reading Book" that all incoming freshmen read at Washington State University (nominations are submitted a year in advance by anyone in the University community and a board convenes to decide on a choice for the subsequent year...I submitted "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" with an accompanying essay explaining how it would be used across the University curricula and was pleasantly surprised when it was announced as the "Common Reading Book" for the fall 2012-Spring 2013 academic school year). This book should be on everyone's must-read list! I will now purchase the award-winning audiobook and look forward to the movie.
