Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I really wanted this to be funnier. In fact, there were times that I read this that I thought if I really knew this woman, I'd run as far away as I could get from her! I do feel sorry for her children sometimes, which is why I couldn't be overly amused by everything that happened (even though I think that was the intent).

Funny enough, as I try to describe this book, I'd say it comes in waves. There are times that the storytelling is so great and it's a book you don't want to put down. But, other times, it seems the author was just pushing through to the end. Overall, it's still a good read and I was happy to see that I could, in fact, be entranced (if even for a while) by a lifeboat story after Life of Pi.

This is an easy read, like them all -- but, it's my indulgence, so sue me. I am happy that there's a lot more Lula in this book.

You would think that this is chick lit by the first half of the book, but it gets very deep and incredibly moving and STILL has a happy chick-lit ending!
