Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Gift

GIVE ME THE GIFT! The Gift book review Dear Reader, if you are reading this I assume you like reading, and this is a review about a book, that you read. The Gift, by James Patterson is a sequel to Witch and Wizard. Witch and Wizard, in short, is where the siblings Wisty and Whit, get taken away because they are accused have unearthly powers so they go on an adventure to be reunited with their parents and find answers while simultaneously taking down the New Order, the N.O. for short(Ohhh, I see what you did there…). Now that you’re caught up, our story starts with Whit starting to tell the story of what happens (By the way this is past tense) where they are heading to the abandon factory to help the kids who are also fighting the New Order, and that’s about anything different from the first book. They go to try inful trait the New Order base and get recaptured, like the first book, escape, like the first book, find answers and their parents, which they do but it’s for naught, and head for the Garfunkel's, except instead of trying to go back they found it, and then cliffhanger for the next book. Honestly, it didn’t work for a sequel, actually it’s almost like it’s the same book except a different location, and a different ending. Moving on to the characters, I like the transitions between the two characters , but the actual characters are flat, and it doesn’t help that this book suffers ‘Super Mario Plot Itis’ Mcguffin A gets captured by enemy B and hero C needs to save mcguffin A, while taking down enemy B. Also a side effect of this can be repetitiveness. The main villain, The One who is the One, doesn’t show any emotion either, all we hear of him is how threatening he is, but Wisty and Whit do nothing to stop him, and they have the same powers as him, so why not do anything. Another plot point that irritates me is that Whit and Wisty should not to go infiltrate the New Order’s base if it failed last time, so it’s a waste of time. Well do to the ending of this book, which I will not spoil, hopefully the third book, The Fire, will not follow the same pattern as the first two because of the character change and loss of. If you want to know what I’m talking about, then read the first two (I guarantee you the first is better). 3/5, must read to understand the plot.

I think this is a great pick up and read book, but not one of those books that wanted me to keep reading but still enjoyed it at the same time.
