Between Shades of Gray
by
Ruta Sepetys

Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Septeys is a heartbreaking tale of love and loss. It takes place in 1941, during Joseph Stalin’s rule. Lina is your average 15 year old. She is getting ready to leave for art school, when the NKVD (Soviet Secret Police) barge into their Lithuanian home and cramp them all into a disgusting train car. Separated and always worried for her father, Lina leaves behind secret messages in her art that she hopes will reach him. On this treacherous journey to Siberia, Lina must be strong and hopeful for her family to survive this tragedy. I loved this story, and I give it 5/5 stars. Septeys painted a beautiful and sadly little known historical fiction of the Lithuanian, Finnish, Estonian and Latvian deportation. I think this book was very easy to read, and it had good flow and pacing. The characters in the story were deep and thoughtful, giving up much to help their families. It is an emotional and heartfelt story which I would recommend for book lovers everywhere.

Incantation
by
Alice Hoffman

All in all, Incantation by Alice Hoffman was okay. It gave you SO much to talk about, it being placed in the time of the Spanish inquisition. It really made you ponder on a lot of different levels. It contained a bunch of hidden metaphors (which you need to really think about) that you'd probably only grasp in a book group-club sort of thing. I'd recommend it for book groups, as you would get way more out of it than if you would've reading it on your own. On the other hand, it takes a very long time to get into, which is a bit frustrating, because you want to be pulled in on the first page, not on the hundredth. This book has many different emotions however, like envy, loss, faith, honor. This story is very meaningful, and the author does not hold back the gruesome details. I would not read it again, but I have learned from it, and that is what I took away from the book.
