Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Straight Man

I love Straight Man! I've read it three times, which is some kind of record for me ? and even though Russo's other books, which include [t]Empire Falls[/t] and [t]The Whore's Child[/t], are terrific in their own right, I think Straight Man will always be my sentimental favorite. Hank Devereaux's voice is distinctive and hilarious. I still hear him in my head on a day-to-day basis, commenting on the world around me. Maybe that makes me legally insane; if so, don't tell me ? I'll just chalk it up to my obsessive devotion to Straight Man. Other recommendations: [t]Lucky Jim[/t] by Kingsley Amis; [t]Pnin[/t] by Vladimir Nabokov; [t]Wonder Boys[/t] by Michael Chabon; [t]The Blue Angel[/t] by Francine Prose; and [t]The Name of the World[/t] by Denis Johnson.
