Fistful of Collars A Chet & Bernie Mystery
by
Spencer Quinn
Virginia
, January 02, 2013
This is the fifth in the series of Chet & Bernie mysteries. Each one is better than the last. Bernie is a private eye assisted by his dog, Chet. Books are narrarted by Chet with numerous dog musings on dog biscuits, the joy of riding shot gun, human's inferior sence of smell and SQUIRREL!! What was I saying??? Good mystery, but better humor.

Pale Blue Eye

I read a lot of historical fiction and/or mysteries and I had high hopes for this one but it was the worst book I read in 2011. The word tedious springs to mind. No likable characters and no feel for time or place. Ending was contrived andwent against all that had happened up to that pount.

Girl Meets God A Memoir
by
Lauren Winner
Virginia
, January 19, 2012
I picked up this book because the cover was interesting. The author was raised a secular Jew, converted to Orthodox Judaism and eventually converted to Christianity. In the book she describes her walk with God and how she is continuing to learn. She describes in detail how Christians could benefit from knowing more about Judaism and even adopting some Jewish practices. I liked it because I do not think she has an agenda, rather she is on a spiritual journey and invites the reader to come along.

Packing for Mars the Curious Science of Life in the Void
by
Mary Roach
Virginia

Science Light. In explaining how scientists overcame the problems of putting humans into space it becomes evident that humans are the problem, not the engineering of the spacecraft. The author uses a big dose of humor to keep the reader interested and educated. You don't need to be an engineer to enjoy this book.

Twilight: Twilight 1
by
Stephenie Meyer
Virginia
, January 04, 2010
This book (and the ones that followed) quickly captured my imagination and transported me to a different world. I enjoyed getting to know the people, vampires and werewolves of Forks WA. I look for books that allow me to escape my reality and spend some time in a different time/place. Stephenie Meyer is a talanted author and I look forward to whatever new tale she writes next. Books beat movies every time.

Fly On The Wall
by
E Lockhart

This book is an excellent story about life at an arts magnet high school with belieavble charaacters. Gretchen, who considers herself just an ordinary girl, narrates with a believable voice even when something extraordinary happens to her. My only criticism is that there is way too much profanity. Many who would enjoy the story will be turned off by the heavy use of profanity. It is not necessary.

24 Girls in 7 Days

Great book for teens during prom season. It is narrated by a senior boy with his take on life & love. As a high school librarian I felt the characters and situations to be real, in a humerous way.

Pleasant cozy mystery, dealing with small town church politics. A few plot twists were surprising. Believe series will get better as characters become more developed.

Magyk

I loved this book! Like JK Rowling, the author is British. This story centers around a family of wizards (seven sons & an adopted daughter) and assorted friends. In this world wizards & humans live together in cooperation. There are as many plot twists as a Harry Potter book but it never gets as dark as HP has become. There is lots of humor. Everything about this story is delightful and I recommend it to kids 10 through adult. My favorite chapter ia actually the postscript where the fates of many of the minor characters is explained.

High Heels Are Murder Josie Marcus Mystery Shopper
by
Elaine Viets
Virginia
, December 12, 2006
Viets has created a new series centered around Josie, who is a mystery shopper. This book is the second in series. Josie is sent to shoe shop (and spy). Story is told with good detail, much humor and a few twists before the satisfying ending. All of Viet'e books are populated with interesting characters. Imagine, getting paid to shop - how does one sign up?

Beautiful holiday story. It shows a Christian family that suffers a setback bcome able to preform a mitzvah for new Jewish friends. Both religions are respected. Illustrations help tell the story.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
by

This was my favorite book when I was in fourth grade. Now I have had the pleasure of reading it again with my daughter. It still rings true. Who wouldn't want to live undiscovered in a museum and roam the exhibits? The book explains questions you might wonder about; how do they get money for food and do they bathe? Yes, they help solve a mystery but what I really love about this book is the sense that the children really hid out in the museum & I wish I could join them.

Easy Baking Hersheys Cocoa
by

There are only 43 recepies in the whole book. I think most of them have appeared previously in magazine ads. On the good side, there is a photo with each. Might be good for brand new bakers; if you have any experience baking, pass this one by.

All three stories are beautifully written. Each tells about a different girl and a problem she faces during the Christmas season. The relationships seem real. Each is bittersweet and touching.

Mariners Compass
by
Earlene Fowler
Virginia
, October 19, 2006
I've read all of Earlene Fowler's mysteries and this is my favorite. It is a rare mystery in which no one is murdered & no dead bodies turn up but there is a compelling mystery to solve. The interaction between Benni and her husband rings true. Ms Fowler writes compelling characters that readers will care about.
