Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Witches Abroad Discworld 12
by
Terry Pratchett
Susan C
, October 23, 2014
This is one of the best of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. For those who aren't familiar with the series, the author has created a world that looks a little like Victorian London, a little like Hogwarts and a little like Oz. His books are full of humor, wisdom and warmth. They do not need to be read in any particular order and are grouped around different sets of characters. Witches Abroad is one of the books grouped around a coven of witches who alternately care for and terrorize the people of the kingdom of Lancre. It comes after Wyrd Sisters (another good one.) In Witches Abroad the witches are on a mission to stop a beautiful but poor young girl from marrying a prince - which turns out to be a lot harder than you would think.

Hunting Shadows
by
Charles Todd
Susan C
, February 26, 2014
Todd's detective is a shell-shocked veteran of the Great War. Returned to Scotland Yard, he unravels puzzles while trying not to become unravelled himself. In this 16th installment he must solve the mystery of 2 deaths while trying not to become the 3rd murder victim. This is an excellent addition to an intelligent, intricate series.

Steamy Kitchens Healthy Asian Favorites 100 Recipes That Are Fast Fresh & Simple Enough for Tonights Supper
by
Jaden Hair

I bought this book because I noticed that the employees of my favorite Asian restaurant don't eat the same food they offer on their menu. Their bowls of broth-based noodles & veggies looked tastier and healthier than my fried, sauce-laden chicken over white rice. The recipes in this book live up to the promise - they taste authentic, are easy to prepare and taste wonderful. If you like the book (and I think you will) head over to her blog for more recipes and beautiful food photography.

A Rather Charming Invitation
by
C. a. Belmond

If this book were a drink it would be a champagne cocktail - light, charming and bubbly. It is the third in a series of books about a former film-researcher who becomes a heiress and finds true love. In this installment there is a French chateau, a Swiss chalet, and a wedding....maybe. Take this book to the beach-- it is the antidote to bathing suit shopping.
