I love audio books. They keep me company as I shuffle my children here and there and as I do mundane chores around the house. However there is nothing more disappointing that a great story read by an inadequate reader. Ugh- turn on the NPR and check out the written work. In this instance Mr Lang is PHENOMENAL! He read as an older southern lady, a young goth chick, a weathered rock and roll dude, a sinister older gentlemen to name a few and he was incredible. I actually caught myself smiling at how much I was enjoying his acting. Because honestly that what it was to me - he was not just reading the work, he was portraying the characters and that is a treat. It helps of course that Mr Hills story is suspenseful and gritty and rolls along at an exciting pace. Great package deal - great story and a fabulous reader.

Glitter & Glue A Memoir
by
Kelly Corrigan

I actually received this book as a gift and while waiting to pick up my daughter after school I cracked it open. Not only was I late picking her up because I lost track of time but I continued reading it well into the night. It spoke to my personally as a mother and a daughter but anyone who has been young and free and hopeful in their youthful selves will enjoy this book . The author, Kelly Corrigan, takes you along and experience those awkward and heady moments as a nanny in a foreign land. But by far my favorite aspect of the book are the moments with her mother, her mothers sturdy, realistic persona shines through and makes me want more. I'm so glad I read this book - it made me cry and laugh and I' am looking forward to reading more by Mrs Corrigan. "And it occurs to me that maybe the reason my mother was so exhausted all the time wasn't because she was doing so much but because she was feeling so much."

My Abandonment

I truly was engrossed by about 3/4 of this book. The "voice" of e 13 year old girl was intriguing and true. Peter Rocks details of life in Forest Park (the girl and her father are homeless but live in the park) and their survival techniques is reason alone to enjoy this novel. However, the last 1/4 of the book seemed to veer way off. The tone and feeling of the book changed dramatically. I still believe it's worth a read though especially for the beautiful portrayal of a father and his daughter and their survival off the grid.

The Fifth Wave

I can see why this novel achieved popularity- it is ripe with interesting characters and the scenario - alien "invasion" and the repercussions of such - is dealt with enough graphic moments to be compelling but not so intensely graphic that it will offend those with a more sensitive nature. Looking forward to the sequel.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette

A tale of loss; loss of self, loss of dreams, loss of certainty. Heavy subjects , indeed. However, this fine novel explores these issues in a unique and almost whimsical manner, not only in the expressions of the characters but in the format of the book itself. As a result, it is a dynamic experience going through the pages as they are laid out as letters, emails and reports. And the characters themselves i found to be sympathetic and somewhat familiar... Haven't we all encountered a "gnat" in our lives?
