My Stubborn Heart
by
Becky Wade
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
Becky Wade may just be my new favorite author. Her book, My Stubborn Heart, blew me away. Kate Donovan is the main character and has been through the wringer with relationships. She is exhausted by men and the dating/relationship game and moves up north to Pennsylvania to help her grandmother restore the old house that she is living in. While helping her grandmother, Kate meets Matt, a mysterious man, who ends up helping with the restoration. Matt has scars from his past and is content to live in darkness until he meets Kate. This novel is a breath of fresh air and had me laughing one minute and crying the next. The writing style is fresh and it is a very quick read. I did not want to put the book down. I will definitely be looking for more of Becky Wade’s books in the future. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

The Lifestyle of a Prophet: A 21-Day Journey to Embracing Your Calling
by
James W Goll
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
James W. Goll’s book, The Lifestyle of a Prophet, was send to me at just the right time. I had been looking for a book that would stretch me and my understanding of God and how He works. This was it. What an amazing read. Goll writes a 21 day guide that explores intimacy with God and how to hear God speaking to you as He guides you toward the calling that He has for you. This was definitely not an easy read and took time to digest. I had to read several parts over again just to make sure I understood exactly what Goll was trying to say. Goll’s Lifestyle of a Prophet has challenged me in my faith and encouraged me to strengthen my intimacy with the Lord. If you are looking for a book to challenge what you think you know about God, this is the book for you. I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing Group for review purposes only.

Spiritual Danger of Doing Good
by
Peter Greer and Anna Haggard
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
Peter Greer’s book, The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good, was a very interesting read. I never thought that their could be negative spiritual ramifications for doing good or helping others. Greer challenged me with this book as I began to see how “doing good” as Christians can often lead to a prideful heart and arrogant attitude. While it is important to make a difference for Jesus in the world around us, Greer cautions that often times what is most important in our lives can fall to the wayside. He also instructs his readers that sometimes it is more important who we are as Christ followers rather than what we are doing. It is the character that counts, no the acts, no matter how well intentioned they may be. This is an amazing book for leaders and volunteers in the church as well and can be very convicting at times. Greer writes with humility and humor which makes some harder to swallow parts sink in a little easier. I highly recommend this author and this book and will definitely go back to this book in the future. I received a complimentary copy of Greer’s book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

The Jesus Story: Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English
by
William H. Marty
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
The Jesus Story written by Dr. William H. Marty is a well organized chronologial account of the life of Jesus. Marty takes the New Testament and arranges it so that all of the stories and events that occurred are in the exact order that they happened all of those years ago. He simplifies the text in that it is written in a clear and straight forward manner so that believers and non-believers alike can comprehend exactly what is going on. This book reads more like a story than it does the actual Bible without leaving the important events found in the Bible. This would be the perfect gift for a new believer or non believer for that matter who feel intimidated due to the lack of Bible knowledge they may have. This is a great read and I would highly recommend Dr. Marty’s book to friends and family alike. I received a copy of this book from the Bethany House Publishing company for review purposes only.

Chasing Hope
by
Kathryn Cushman
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
Chasing Hope, written by author Kathryn Cushman is a refreshing read that is an incredible reminder of God’s faithfulness no matter how hard our struggles may seem. Cushman pens a tale involving a driven runner with dreams to run at the Olympic Games and a trouble making teen who seem to be the most unlikely of pairs. The main character, Sabrina, has her Olympic dreams crushed and loses hope until she meets young Brandy who is trapped in a sea of troubles and a past that she just can’t seem to outrun. Cushman does an amazing job of sucking the reader into her story and painting these characters in the most realistic of ways. It is easy to read this story and you find yourself lost in the pages from the very beginning. I love this book and this author and would definitely recommend this book to my friends, family, and anyone that is struggling with crushed dreams and the expectations that we so often have for ourselves here on earth.

Return to Me
by
Lynn N Austin
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
Lynn Austin outdoes herself yet again. Her new novel centers around the prophesies of the Old Testament coming to fruition as the remnant of Israel journeys out of Babylon and back to Jerusalem. Austin is not only an amazing storyteller, but she is also able to bring the Old Testament to life in a way that makes understand Israels past and the struggle of the Jewish people to remain faithful so much easier. This is the story of a Jewish family, led by a priest named Iddo, who embark on this journey back to the Promised Land. The family is torn in different directions" Some finding it difficult to let go of the past and trust God for their future, and some that are firm in their convictions and know that following the Lord back to their true home is the only way. I am so excited about this new series that Lynn Austin is writing and always LOVE her writing style. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite Christian authors. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

Do What Jesus Did A Real Life Field Guide To Healing The Sick Routing Demons & Changing Lives Forever
by
Robby Dawkins
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
If you are looking for a book to rock your world and challenge you in ways you never could imagine, Robby Dawkins’ book, Do What Jesus Did, does just that. I have never been challenged like I have been reading this book. Robby challenges his readers to not just be the “nice” and “good” Christian, He teaches that in fact, the Christian life is not all about being “nice” and “safe” at all, it is about living a radical life, just like Jesus did. In this book, Robby opened my mind and heart to understanding our God given ” power tool” that God has equipped up with to impact our world through the power of the Holy Spirit. Growing up in a strict and legalistic church, I never explored much outside of the box when it came to the idea of spiritual gifts. The true stories in this book are amazing and will give you chills. They will also give you the confidence to walk more confidently in your faith and believe that God has given so much more power to believers than we could ever imagine. So much untapped because we simply do not believe. Reading this book made me want to take a trip up to Pastor Robby’s church in Chicago to learn even more. This was an amazing and utterly life changing book and I highly recommend it to anyone in a dry spot in their faith, anyone who is ready to experience God outside of the box that we so often put him in. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Chosen Book Publishers, a division of Bethany House, for review purposes only.

Pilgrimage: My Journey to a Deeper Faith in the Land Where Jesus Walked
by
Lynn Austin
bookmommy
, December 15, 2013
Lynn Austin’s Pilgrimage is an open and honest peek into her own faith struggles as she travels to Israel and walks the paths of Jesus. This book is refreshing and eye opening all at the same time. It is much easier to picture these biblical places now after reading Mrs. Austin’s vivid descriptions. I can picture myself there walking the mountain paths and peering across the landscape of modern Jerusalem. Verses and passages in the Bible that never seemed clear before make much more sense knowing the terrain, culture, climate etc. of the land where Jesus is from. Austin is very open and raw about her struggles in this book which makes it easier as a Christian to know that we all go through dry seasons, doubting, questioning God’s purposes and plans for our lives. This book has been so refreshing and I have really enjoyed not only the content but the writing style as well. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

What Your Husband Isn't Telling You: A Guided Tour of a Man's Body, Soul, and Spirit
by
David Murrow
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
David Murrow’s book, What Your Husband Isn’t Telling You, is an amazing eye opening treat as is dives deep in to the mind of men. Murrow’s style is sharp and witty and I found myself many times cracking a smile or laughing out loud at certain parts in the book. This book was so enlightening for me as a wife as I have begun to understand things about my husband that I never understood before. Murrow helps readers to understand the inner-workings of a man’s heart as well as what his deepest needs are. This is a book that was intriguing to me and I finished in a couple of hours. It is also a book that I have recommended to friends and will definitely pass on. I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

Angels, Miracles, and Heavenly Encounters: Real-Life Stories of Supernatural Events
by
James Stuart Bell
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
This book does not rank high on my list of favorites. Some of the stories in James Stuart Bell’s book are amazing, while others come across as fake or somewhat hokey. The writing style was not impressive and at times seemed almost forced. I could not get through the whole book and halfway through had to put it down. I am not a fan or books that are a collection of short stories or entries and I think I will steer clear of books like this in the future. I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

These Are the Days of Elijah: How God Uses Ordinary People to Do Extraordinary Things
by
R. T. Kendall
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
These Are the Days of Elijah details the life of Elijah and how God used an ordinary man to do great things. One of the greatest prophets in all of the Bible, Elijah is a man that we can all associate with as he struggled with the very things that we struggle with today. Kendall does a great job of weaving Elijah’s story and struggles with real life obstacles and struggles that we encounter today. While Elijah struggled, he had great faith in a God who never left his side. R.T. Kendall writes in a clear and precise way which makes it easy for the reader to understand the principles and main point presented in his book. This would be a great book to use in a bible study or small group setting. I received a free copy of this book from Chosen Publishers for review purposes only.

Starflower
by
Elizabeth Camden
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
Starflower is a magical and enchanting novel that reminded me of the magic of a classic fairy tale mixed with folklore and a bit of Lord of the Rings. Anne Elisabeth Stengl does a wonderful job of painting the background scenery and creating a world of fantasy that anyone can find themselves sucked into and in love with. When the fair Lady Gleamdren is captured, Bard Eanrin sets off on an epic adventure to free her from the clutches of the cursed dragon-witch. Along the way, Bard Eanrin comes upon Starflower, a young woman who he comes to find may be the key to helping free Lady Gleamdren. This is an amazing book and definitely an enjoyable read for fantasy lovers! I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for review purposes only.

Veiled Rose
by
Anne Elisabeth Stengl
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
Veiled Rose is a magical tale reminiscent of a fairytale. The main character, Rose Red, is hidden in the forest covered in rags carrying with her a big secret. She lives a life of squalor and lonliness in the woods until the day she meets a handsome young man named Leo who soon becomes a friend to Rose Red. They set out on an adventure together to find a monster that has been terrorizing their lands. Anne Elisabeth Stengl is a master at creating a magical land and characters that seem as if they are straight out of a movie. This novel is an easy and enjoyable read and I will definitely be checking more of Stengl’s books in the future. Guardian

Beverly Lewis

, May 19, 2013
When Beverly Lewis’ book, The Guardian, came available for me to review, I jumped right on it and could not wait to receive my copy in the mail. Lewis is one of my favorite Christian authors and I could not wait to dive into this gem of a book. In this novel, Lewis transports her readers to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania where Jodi Whitfield finds a lost girl wandering on the side of the road. Jodi finds that the girl is unable to speak English and wonders where she has come from. This book is full of drama and mystery as Jodi searches to find the answers behind the young girls past. Beverly Lewis is a master at Amish fiction and does an amazing job of helping the reader to understand the culture of the Amish people. Pick up a copy of the Guardian, you will not be disappointed! Tutors Daughter
by
Julie Klassen
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
Being a huge fan of Downton Abbey and other period dramas and fiction, I could hardly wait to dig into Julie Klassen’s, The Tutor’s Daughter. Klassen does an amazing job of setting the mood and introducing the characters in a way that makes the reader want to read this book in one cozy sitting. In this novel, Emma Smallwood and her father move to the top of a manor at the top of a cliff as he takes on the job of tutoring the four sons of a wealthy baronet. The Tutor’s Daughter is full of mystery and intrigue as Emma begins to hear mysterious piano music in the night and comes to find strange mementos left for her in her room at night. I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down. Klassen’s style is impeccable and multi-faceted. What a treat to spend time reading this gem. Unlikely Suitor
by
Nancy Moser
bookmommy
, May 19, 2013
Nancy Moser’s book, An Unlikely Suitor, is an amazing read. I thoroughly enjoyed diving into the world of New York dressmaker, Lucy Scarpelli, and her family. I especially loved the dress making details and descriptions in this novel. I instantly felt like I was transported back in time and was a fly on the wall in the dress shop with Lucy and the other ladies in the shop. Nancy Moser also does an amazing job with character development as she weaves multiple story lines together with simplicity. This was a very easy and quick read and a book. I have found another author to add to my list of favorites, and I can hardly wait to get another one of Moser’s books in my hand. Well done!
