First Detective The Life & Revolutionary Times of Vidocq Criminal Spy & Private Eye
by
James Morton
Dana Welcker
, March 17, 2019
To go from a criminal and escapee to the man who started the Surete was a wild ride. I can’t imagine living in France while all this was going on. The criminals involved were from all walks of life. Vidocq’s life was up and down and full of self reinvention. I had trouble pronouncing some of the French names but I learned alot about the history of the times. I got a great deal more out of the book than just learning about the first detective agancy.

Oscar Wilde & a Game Called Murder The Oscar Wilde Mysteries
by
Brandreth, Gyles

, May 30, 2017
I loved it and couldn't put it down. To have Oscar hanging out with Bram Stoker, Arthur Conan Doyle and others is wonderful. The descriptions of situations and period clothes is captivating and easily visualized. I can't wait to read the others in the series.

The Columbus Affair
by
Berry, Steve
Dana Welcker
, February 26, 2016
Steve Berry didn't disappoint with this book either! I was late getting back to lunch more than once because I couldn't put it down. I have never studied American history because I thought it not as interesting as the middle ages but Berry proved me wrong. While this book is not really about American history what it taught me about Columbus made me want to go out and find more on the subject! I love the writer's notes at the end of each book. It takes a lot of restraint not to read those before reading the book!

Baudolino

Umberto Eco

This was a great read. I love the time period in which it was set in Constantinople but hearing about their travels and adventures was wonderful. I could really feel what the characters were feeling and relate to their misfortunes. I can't wait to read more books by Mr. Eco!

This may have been the fastest I have ever read a book! It had me captivated at the first chapter and I barely put it down until I was finished. I love Steve Berry's books and this one did not disappoint! I have always been fascinated by pirates and the way Steve intertwined pirates into modern times while also including Congressional and Presidential history was masterful.

The House of the Seven Gables
by
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Dana Welcker
, April 22, 2015
I started reading this book to see how similar it was to the movie with Vincent Price. While I love Vincent Price there were surprisingly few similarities. The book was captivating and now it I am confused why a true to book movie has not been made, that I am aware of. The characters were vividly described in dress and emotion. Certain family historical events were withheld until the end keeping me engaged and wondering. I found myself distressed at times and later elated. I am glad I took the time to read the book and not rely on the movie.

The Raven
by
Edgar Allan Poe

, October 22, 2014
Poe is definately one of my favorite authors and the Raven is my favorite poem! I never get tired of hearing it or reciting it. Many Poe stories and poems have morals to the story or points which invoke a great deal of reflection. They are not just scary stories.

Death Of A Witch
by
Mc Beaton
Dana Welcker
, October 22, 2014
I haven't read an MC Beaton book I didn't like but Hamish is definately my favorite detective. The book is so descriptive it is easy to put yourself in the middle of the town. The books do not need to be read in order to know the repeating characters. You will feel like you know them all!

Amber Room
by
Steve Berry
Dana Welcker
, October 22, 2014
This book was gripping from the start like all Steve Berry books. I had no idea what Amber was prior to reading this book but to learn about such an artifact was exciting. I love the way Steve separates the fact from fiction in the end. Being a history buff Steve's books always lead me to new books!

Decline & Fall Of The Roman Empire 3 Volumes
by
Edward Gibbon
Dana Welcker
, August 29, 2014
I have read many books on the Roman Empire and Medieval Times and somehow they always end up referencing Gibbon, so I decided to read Gibbon. I expected it to be an encyclopedia but it is that and so much more. It is easy to read and packed with information on each page, tidbits that I have never heard of or read anywhere else. After each reading session I have fun facts to share with my family and anyone I run into! For anyone interested in history of any age this compilation is a must read.

Dracula
by
Bram Stoker
Dana Welcker
, April 02, 2014
This book is not at all what I was expecting, it is so much more. I love vampire stories and movies so I made up my mind to read the original. This is not a gory or excessively violent book. In some parts it is a tender love story while other parts it is the battle of man vs. evil. It is told tenderly and intelligently and keeps the reader engaged. No Dracula movie I have ever seen has followed the book. I even received a pleasant shock in the first few pages when a present day brand name was mentioned!

Inferno
by
Dan Brown
Dana Welcker
, February 27, 2014
After reading The Lost Symbol I thought it would be hard for Dan Brown to continue the suspense and emotional involvement he produced in that book but he has. I was hooked on Inferno after the first 5 pages. I read during my lunch hour and I now have a really hard time putting it away and getting back to work! The combination of history and suspense in this book make it a must read.

Peloponnesian War
by
Kagan, Donald
Dana Welcker
, January 28, 2014
Tackling a subject such as the Peloponnesian War can be intimidating for many readers however, this book is actually an easy read. The subjects and events of this war are laid out in such a manner that, even with a limited knowledge on the subject prior to reading this book, anyone can keep up and understand what is happening and why. The reasoning that went into battle decisions are clearly explained. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Venetian Betrayal
by
Steve Berry
Dana Welcker
, January 22, 2014
As usual I couldn't put this book down! I usually think of myself as a slow reader until I pick up a Steve Berry book. This book really made you think about real life situations. I love the history in his books and that is why I buy them but this book touched on a subject in today's world that could change the world for the better if only it were true! I have met Steve Berry and he is not only a great writer he is a good guy participating where he can to support libraries in a time where their budgets are constantly getting cut.

Greek Myths 2 Volumes
by
Robert Graves
Dana Welcker
, October 24, 2013
These books are fabulous and packed with information! They not only relate the Greek myths but tell additional stories after the retelling of each myth. Sometimes the after stories are just as interesting as the myth I am truly hooked. I have also discovered additional sources for more reading about the ancient peoples and civilizations.

Malory: The Knight Who Became King Arthur's Chronicler
by
Hardyment, Christina
Dana Welcker
, September 12, 2013
This was a great book! I had never thought about the history of the author of Le Morte d'Arthur before but this book was not only a lesson on his history and life but on English and French history as well. It was easy reading for such a lively period with so many intrigues going on. There were so many references to other early books and writings I am inspired to do some more research and see what I can find!

The Philo Vance Murder Cases: 3-The Scarab Murder Case & the Kennel Murder Case
by
S. S. Van Dine
Dana Welcker
, August 01, 2013
I had seen Philo Vance movies but never read an S.S. Van Dine book until I bought several at Powell's. This book was certainly no disappointment. I could not put it down until the dastardly deed was unfolded for me. I can't wait to start on the next one! Van Dine keeps you on the edge of your seat with a complicated scenario while keeping it easy and entertaining to follow along.

Lost Symbol
by
Dan Brown

Dan Brown continues to make me stop and think and consider new ideas. If you are open minded you will love it. As an American that has visited D.C. In the past he makes me want to go again and check out the sites mentioned in the book! I was engaged until the last page was turned.
