Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

If this story were true, Ruby would not be the first woman to be faced with such an extreme challenge when she discovers she has given up her former good quality of life for that of having inherited a 'bawdy house'. Her integrity is severely tested and she tries to make sense of why her father would think she can continue to run the bawdy house. Since she had made a promise to her father on his death bed to take care of the 'ladies', with God's help she rises to meet the challenge to retain her integrity and do something to help those ladies.

I am surprised no one has commented on this book. I do not usually read such short books that are written in parts since I become impatient to see what happens next and ordinarily I want the complete story in one book. However this exceptional book is startling in its simplicity. Who would ever have thought going to learn a new trade to make a better living during hard financial times could lead to such a life shattering experience for the young couple. So like life in that aspect.

Until We Reach Home

Excellent book that I was almost unable to put down. The storyline presented both good and bad sides of the lifelike folks in the story. The story seems real, and I was unable to stop reading until I found out where home would be and whether their flight to safety brought a better life or not.

Powells Meadowlark Mug

Powell's Merchandise

This mug not only shows the State bird, it would make a perfect reminder of my pleasant trip around Memorial Day that included a stop at Powell's. Even though we had gotten a description of your store before we went, it was a lot like 'stepping into Aladin's cave' even though that was a place of fantasy. Powell's was a surprise not only being so large, but the merchandize was unique and presented many choices of something to bring home as a mini-memory of our visit. There are many collectors of mugs/cups and this one would certainly be a great addition to anyone's collection or serve as a pleasant memory of a visit to Portland. The only store that might present a challenge to Powell's being the top store in Portland is the delightful ice cream shop that we could not seem to stay away from and went almost every day...but that is ice cream and runs a close race for 1st place if ice cream and a good book could be compared.
