Murder on the Horizon

The suspense that builds in the unfolding of the main story line (involving a terrifying group of extremists) interwoven against the backdrop of the very active fire season threatening the Timber Creek area, including Camp Ponderosa (managed by the protagonist, Graycie), kept me turning pages and alternately gnawing my fingernails and holding my breath until I finished the book. It takes two things to get on my list of favorites " great action / suspense, and well-drawn characters that make me care about them. This series has definitely cemented itself at the top of that list. You don’t have to read all three books or read them in sequence, as each book has more than enough strength to stand alone. But it was reading them in sequence that made me really love this series as it allowed me to deepen my relationship as a reader with both good guys and villains alike. It’s like watching a well-written TV series where each week you learn more and more about the characters, until you feel as though you know them and can’t wait to see what happens next. The more I see Graycie in action, the more deeply human she becomes " I like her and care about what happens to her. Baxter, a runaway that develops a friendship with Graycie, alternately warmed my heart and broke it. The story line was great and I’m hooked on the main characters - can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Murder Off the Beaten Path

A great continuation of a new series! I loved this author’s first book, Zero Degree Murder, so I pre-ordered this second book in the series and couldn’t wait to read it. I definitely was not disappointed! Murder Off the Beaten Path digs deeper into the character of the protagonist, Gracie, and in addition to the interesting search and rescue scenes, gives us a glimpse into how well her SAR skills serve her in dealing with the events arising out of her new position as a program director and ropes course manager in a year-round residential camp. I don’t want to give anything away, but the suspense hooked me on page 1 with the prologue, and the fast pace kept me reading non-stop until I finished the book. The vivid writing style made me feel like I was right there in the middle of the action: white-knuckled at every scary turn of events, warmed by her new relationship with Minnie (a sweet dog she rescues), saddened by the loss of her friend Jett. All of the characters are well drawn (including the villains), and I enjoyed watching Gracie develop and deepen as the action unfolds. This fast-paced, well-written book is a fun read, and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait for the next installment…

Zero Degree Murder

As a life-long mystery fan, I’m always looking for something new and different to read. I live in the Pacific Northwest and love the outdoors, so when I found a new mystery involving search and rescue in the California mountains, I couldn’t wait to read the book. Now that I’ve read it, I can’t wait to read the next one in the series! I loved the protagonist, Gracie. She is all at once tough, highly competent, resourceful, strong-willed, pragmatic even in the face of her fears, and yet vulnerable in so many ways. The author does a great job of breathing life into all of her characters, and the descriptive writing was so vivid it often made me feel like I was there, watching the action play out. Also, getting to learn something about the search and rescue process and survival tips from someone who clearly knows her stuff was fun and interesting. Overall, I found the book to be well-written, unique, suspenseful, and so engrossing I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fiction of any kind, but especially mysteries, thrillers, and adventure novels.
