Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
Jillian St. John, February 10, 2015
I absolutely adore Jandy Nelson. I read The Sky is Everywhere 5 times, so when I'll Give You the Sun came out it was a no brainer I had to have it. It was awesome. I love Noah and Jude I love thwor relationship and how complicated and amazing their bond is. I love their quirky little game of dividing up the world. The alternating view points of each twin bringing past and present together was absolutely brilliant.Jandy never fails to envelope me entorely. I could not stop reading this book the first time I read it was in one day. I have reread it once and I plan on reading it again. Its definitely a keeper. Im not great at writing reviews but I try to do my best when I think a book is truly worth everyone's time. This book will not be a disappointment.

Why We Broke Up by Handler, Daniel
Jillian St. John, May 25, 2014
I just read the entire relationship between Min amd Ed. What a cleaver book this was. You have Min writing Ed a note to accompany a box full of things from their relationship (let's face it all of us girls keep little momentos from our relationships). Min goes thru each item from the very first to the very ladt and puts together the story of their relationship and why it didn't work out. They have so much fun and you really like Min even tho she is simultaneously pissing you off. But that moment when they finally do break up (which hello isn't a spoiler it's in the title) i found my self crying and feeling her heart break. I wanted so badly for a different ending. And even know I find myself wishing and wondering what are Min and Ed and Al and Annette and Lauren and Joan all doing right now? I'm happy that I read this book. It made me remember my first love and heartbreak. I think anyome who reads it will identify with Minerva. I wish I knew what she was doing right now...

Looking for Alaska by John Green
Jillian St. John, May 16, 2014
Okay so the first book I've ever read by John Green was The Fault in our Stars and we all know what a wonderful but that was! (If you dont then it should absolutely be your next book) since reading The Fault in Our Stars I have become kinda addicted to John Green. He is an amazing writer. I've read Paper Towns, An Abundance of Katherines, Will Grayson Will Grayson and I just completed Looking forAlaska. Not since Fault have I loved characters so much. My heart was broken again by this book. I know that it will go on my book shelf along side my other favorites. John Green's books are consideredYA but I am 30 years old and I have never loved a single author more than I adore John Green. This book makes me feel heartbreak, serious, hilarious, angry, and many more emotions. I started reading these in order to have something to talk about with my little sister who is 15 years younger than me and I am so happy I did. I don't want to give u a summary of the book. I don't want to spoil it I just want whoever is reading this to say, "Damn, I need to read this book." Trust me you eill not regret it.

    Matched 01 by Ally Condie
Jillian St. John, February 12, 2014
I enjoyed this book. It was a different twist on the future dystopian society books that have been popular lately. It's not all war war war its more about love and becoming who you are. I absolutely loved the characters and the storyline. It was simply a wonderful book and series.

Infernal Devices 01 Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
Jillian St. John, November 08, 2013
I loved the mortal instruments books and these clockwork books are good too except for me it was a little hard getting into it. That being said once I got into it I couldn't stop reading it or thinking about it. Of course I fell in live with Jace's ancestor will. And tessa was endearing as well. Cassandra Clare does an excellent job of transporting you into the 1800's. I do recommend this book to everyone specially my fellow mortal instruments fanatics!

Divergent 03 Allegiant by Veronica Roth
Jillian St. John, October 24, 2013
Allegiant is the final book in the divergent series. It was shockingly heart breaking and wonderful. I will carry this book in my heart and mind forever. Tris Prior will always be my hero and Tobias Eaton will always have my heart. I hope everyone has a chance to read this wonderful series and fall in love and befriend these characters.

From their first awkward awful attempt at having sex, through their entire friendship and beyond. They were hilarious. They were maddening. They were adorable. I recommend this book to any woman who is struggling with her weight and self esteem. I recommend this book to any woman who is waiting for mr. Perfect. I recomend this book to any woman who knows how to read!

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Jillian St. John, September 14, 2013
As a nurse this book spoke to my compassionate side. As a woman this book spoke to my heart. I absolutely positively loved this book. Will and Louisa made me fall in love with them. I laughed and cried and got mad lol. For days after I was finished reading I couldn't even start my other book I just sat there thinking about Louisa and wishing I could be there for her. I recommend everyone in the universe read this book.

    Divergent 01 by Veronica Roth
Jillian St. John, August 28, 2013
This book and its sequel are both thrilling and adventurous. In between jumping off roof tops and into train carts Tris Prior is learning more about who she is and more importantly who she is when she is face to face with dangerous situations. Of course it isn't all knife throwing and gun shooting! It is also a love story with Tris and Four. An epic love likely to join ranks with Katniss & Petta, Christian & Ana, and Jace & Clary. All in all it is a fantastic book as is Insurgent and hopefully Allegent!

The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Jillian St. John, August 24, 2013
"But what if music is what eacapes when your heart breaks?" One of the most beautiful lines in a book I've read in a long time. Even for a YA book this book is absolutely amazing. I loved it so much. I felt her heart break and confusion. I have 4 sisters and I felt myself wondering howni would react of anything happened to any one of them. This is a beautifully story and I highly recommend it to any reader.
