Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Sibling Society
by
Robert Bly
Discoveries in Consciousness
, September 09, 2013
I have this book in hardback and cassette tape with Robert Bly reading. Bottom Line is that you can not be INTIATED by your own Peer Group. In Psychological terms this could be compared to Enmeshment. I think there has been a mistake with the Title of this book which should have been Iron John part 2. An Older Man Iron John an Archetype INITIATES the young boy who lost his golden reality because he was conforming to all the stuff he grew up with. I recently came across a website full of Dare Devil Snow Board Youth called unofficial Squaw Valley and maybe a dozen such Ski Area's but this is all over the World. Many of these Youths have died or have been maimed for life, and the comments SNEER at each others efforts to do the most outrageous stunts, and the website is packed full of BRATS. There is no second chance for these young guys and a few young women, and the lack of CARE is off the charts. Between the lines of A SIBLING SOCIETY is a stunning lack of Self Care, and when you don't care about yourself, you are not likely to care about other people. This book is an understatement of a social problem that still nobody can see is going on. Its many generations old. This book is well worth the read, and it will probably take years to understand it. Its the most resold of all Robert Bly's books, and it could stand a revision especially if it could be tied in with Iron John or any similar book on INITIATION. Maybe then more people will wake up and see that they have been sacrificing themselves to the wrong thing, and that each generation has its own sacrifice to the wrong thing. This book is packed full of clues that for me never went away after I put the book down.

The Interpretation of Fairy Tales
by
Marie-Louise Von Franz
Discoveries in Consciousness
, August 31, 2013
Interpretation of Fairy Tales by Marie Louise Von Franz is a Master Piece with how to Understand The Code Language of Symbols embedded with in Fairy Tales, and she is expert with weaving together the four functions of Jungian Psychology. Robert Bly mentioned 2 authors as being primary behind his book Iron John ie Marie Louise Von Franz and James Hillman both were direct students of C.G. Jung. Marie Louise Von Franz has no peer group as I have read many of her writings and she was never afraid to say it as she saw it. C.G. Jung was very concerned with what people thought of him and he walked on many egg shells, and I have friends in Comparative Literature who can not read C.G. Jung but can easily read Marie Louise Von Franz. I appreciate that this book goes into the suffering of the Negative Animus or Blue Beard Father Figure that holds women prisoner and that they need to do something Yang to give the Animus a useful job to do. Robert Bly quoted Von Franz who said you never get rid of any aspect of the psyche, at best you can give it a better job to do. Redefining job descriptions is one of the Miracles with in Fairy Story and I've been in study of this for more than 30 years here in New Mexico with Native People and their stories as well as The Grim Brothers and the Russian Stories that have so much to say about the Repressed Feminine inside of men. All of Marie Louise Von Franz writings are shadow stories until awareness shines the light on it. She makes C.G. Jungs life work digestible because she cooked it on the stove a lot more and made it spicy, and will tell you point blank that this part of the story is a grave yard. You do not have to guess where you are with this woman.
