Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. This first novel by an accomplished writer, Richard Compson Sater, is a gentle, well-written story of love that is forbidden in several ways. Second Lieutenant Harris Mitchell has just re-enlisted in the Air Force following the repeal of DADT. He has a chance now to serve and be who he is. His initial assignment is to be the aide to General Seamus O'Neill. The General has a reputation for being demeaning and sometimes cruel to his aides and Harris experiences just that treatment. As he manuvers through each day, learning to anticipate what the General needs and wants, he finds himself falling in love. He is forced to navigate the confusion of his feelings along with the difficulty that a relationship with a superior officer would cause to both of their careers. Saters own experience in the military adds an authenticity and color to the story. An easy to read, lovely story.

Fluke Or I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings
by

Each one of Christopher Moore's books that I have had the pleasure of reading, Fluke being the latest, is funny, poignant and full of strong, intelligent women and sweet, funny and vulnerable men. Fluke is packed with weird and wonderful surprises that make it difficult to put down, leaving one wanting to know how Moore ever came up with such a crazy idea. It is a pleasure to read a book where the characters truly care about each other and about their own lives. Nate and Clay have been working as whale researchers in Hawaii for many years together and have developed a strong bond with each other and a deep love for their subject. This particular summer they find a whale of a different stripe that leads them on a funny, crazy and mind-boggling adventure. I laughed out loud, embarrassed on the bus, read as fast as I could before the next stop and gasped and wondered at the originality of this great tale.
