The Husbands Secret

What would you do if you found a letter from your spouse (who is currently away on business), addressed to you, but only to be read after their death? Would you immediately tear into it (guilty), or would you respect your spouse's privacy? Cecelia convinced herself to do the latter, she even innocently brings it up to her husband John Paul, and he dismisses it as no big deal. Until John Paul rushes home days early from his trip to find that letter in the middle of the night. Cecilia beats him to it, and is suddenly thrust into a world where she no longer even knows her husband, she's read words she can't unread, no matter how hard she wills her brain to forget. Entangled in the life of lies that Cecilia leads are two other women, Rachel and Tess. At first they seem to be unrelated, but as the story progresses, you realize just how messy things have gotten, and they are about to get messier. A fantastic, quick read, pick this book up if you enjoyed Big Little Lies!

The Couple Next Door

This book definitely took me on a ride. Marco and Anne leave their baby home alone while they go next door for a dinner party, and when they return late that night, the baby is gone. Suspicion flies and fingers get pointed. I was initially a little disappointed when the reader finds out who-dun-it pretty early on, but it turns out that things are much more complicated than they first seemed! The author does an excellent job of keeping the target moving as you try to figure out what the heck is going on. Another aspect I really enjoyed was how she beautifully changed through the different characters' point of views, often times abruptly but she manages to make it work and to not interrupt the flow of the story. The plot was great, the writing was great, overall I definitely recommend for a fun, quick read!

Today Will Be Different

I absolutely loved Where'd You Go Bernadette? so when I saw Maria Semple had a new book, I quickly snatched it up and devoured it in a couple days. In true Semple form, the main character Eleanor is quirky and odd, yet dramatic in a magnetic way. You can't enough of her and you can't get away from her. With two mysteries, past and present, unfolding simultaneously, it's impossible to will yourself to put it down and finally go to sleep. Beautifully written to let you experience the whole range of emotions right along side the characters. Hilarity, anguish, surprise, petty sibling irritation, it's all there and more. This book will not disappoint.

Time Travelers Wife

There have only been a handful of books I have ever read that introduce me to characters that become lifelong friends, create landscapes of places I now miss, give me memories of a life I feel like I've lived. The Time Traveler's Wife is one of those books. It is beautifully gripping and yet swoonfully adorable. Claire and Henry become more than friends, the feel like family, which makes it all the more devastating when you run out of pages to turn, which I did compulsively. Be prepared to be fully engulfed in the world of Henry and Claire, this book sticks to your ribs.

The Bad Place

This is one of my favorite Dean Koontz books. I was trying to decide which of two books I was going to start reading next, and when I picked this one up to test out the first chapter, I never put it down. The other book never stood a chance. The Bad Place is filled with action and suspense right from the very beginning. Dean Koontz is also the king of cliffhangers, which keeps you engaged and always wanting more. If you like thrillers, definitely give this one a try!

Reconstructing Amelia

This book is definitely a page turner. The author beautifully gives both Kate and Amelia's perspective during different moments in time, both leading up to the same revelation - what happened to Amelia. The author also does a fabulous job of giving the reader clues instead of spelling everything out, which makes it fun to create your own theories along the way. Reconstructing Amelia focuses a lot around hazing and bullying, but not in a preachy way. I highly recommend this book; you won't want to put it down!

Where'd You Go, Bernadette

This is easily one of my new favorite books. I love the writing structure (almost exclusively correspondence between various characters with a little narration from Bee thrown in there). With so many differnet persepctives, the readers get to know far more than any one character does. There are definitely enough twists and turns to keep you engaged, personally I didn't want to put it down. I found myself both laughing out loud as well as getting teary eyed. One of my favorite things about this is the resolution I felt at the end. I'm not a big fan of leaving the reader with big questions at the end of the story. None of that here. Questions were answered and everything felt wrapped up. A must read!

This is a quality thriller. It definitely captures your attention and holds it throughout. The main characters are likeable and people you want to root for, especially Lacey. The thing I liked most about this book was that it kept me guessing. I was constantly changing my theory about 'whodunit' and even gasped out loud a couple times. For me, if I'm surprised when the author reveals who the bad guy is, it's a HUGE plus (I read a lot of thrillers), and this book did that for me. The book is also set in Portland (the author is local), so that's kind of fun. The only reason it lost a star was because I wasn't a big fan of the love scenes. Overall, I would recommend this book to a friend (and YOU!).
