Dark Tower 04 Wizard & Glass

While I really enjoyed the characters and their creative solutions, I found the middle of the book to be tedious. Also, since half the book is a flashback, you s already know what happens, just not HOW it happens. Truth-be-told, I sincerely believe that if this book hasn't been written by a matter of modern fiction, it would have been an average Sci-fi/fantasy story. King's biggest weakness it's his tendency to be very America-centric when dealing with whole-world problems. In all, it was a well-crafted, average tale. Definitely get the paperback.

Old Mans War Book 1
by
John Scalzi

This book toys with one of the most fascinating concepts in modern science fiction, and does it in a way that is simultaneously engaging and entertaining. The story itself is filled with humanity, humor and lots of sci-fi military action. The characters are believable and engrossing, showing very realistic strengths and weaknesses that make all of us human. I appreciate John Scalzi's approaches to the SCIENCE of science fiction but never felt like it got bogged down in the potentially-lethal morass of "Too Science-y." There's just enough there to keep the story flowing. One caveat: this book is definitely not for kids, Mom and Dad, but I encourage you to read it for yourself and then determine when it's OK for Junior to get a copy.

Phoenix Flight: Rise of the Phoenix Flight: Phoenix Flight Book One
by

I will be the first to admit that Phoenix Flight: Rise of the Phoenix Flight is a fun and insightful romp into a possible semi-utoopian, semi-dystopian future (140 years from now) in which a fledgling unified world government succumbs to a "hostile takeover" by several major corporations, resulting in a corporate world government. That's just in the first two pages. After that, you have an uproarious Sci-Fi/superhero action adventure filled with pitfalls, pratfalls and political pragmatism. That said, I must admit that, as the author of the novel, my opinion is biased. Either way, I invite you to read Phoenix Flight's first book with the knowledge that books two and three will be out before long. Get in on the ground floor!!!!
