An Elegant Solution
by
Robertson, Paul

I did not know what to expect when I began this journey. I have never been interested in mathematics or its history, apart from what I have learned in Literature classes; but I was immediately swept into the language of the novel and its compelling story. I don’t care what anyone else says about it, this novel is a must read. The language Robert uses is just perfect. His writing is very detailed, and filled with movement. You can actually feel the “sliding and twisting of the house and streets” as you read. Robertson covers so many topics with skill and ease; religion, the supernatural, philosophy, social class and finding ones voice in a social hierarchy. The story takes place in the small town of Basel, Switzerland, probably around the 1720’s(lots of clues). Robert skillfully uses his description of the environment and architecture to relay the emotions of the inhabitants of Basel. This novel brings together the two worlds of faith and philosophy. Leonhard Euler is a young man of low social status whose special talents and genuine love for math give him the opportunity to study under a great teacher and mathematician, Master Johann Bernoulli. Leonhard becomes your companion through the entire story. As we read, we are immersed in a thrilling tale of power struggles, murder and genuine love for learning. I have never read any of Paul Robertson’s works before, but I am very impressed. This book is the perfect read for any lover of literature. My own copy is filled with passages I marked just because of their beauty. I urge you to give this book a chance; it is so much more than a mystery novel. Come for the mystery, but stay for the writing. Bethany House Publishers were kind enough to send me a free copy of the book for an honest review.

The Burning of Cherry Hill
by
Butler, A. K.

Do not underestimate this book. Here is the honest truth: some books you read and forget, letting them collect dust on a distant shelf, while others seem to imprint themselves into your very soul, never leaving. “The Burning of Cherry Hill” is, without a doubt, the later. This book was more than I ever expected it to be and it left me breathless, heartbroken and wanting more. The characters were precious and each stood out on their own. Zay Scott, especially, has found a special place in my heart. The relationship with his sister, the importance of family and his courage to do what was right stood out above all others. His strength grew with each chapter and I felt like I was on the journey with him. In the beginning, the cover art is what really drew my attention to the book and I found out that, like the cover, this story is truly a work of art. The world of 2159 is a world so like, yet unlike, our own. The parallels are very disconcerting to me. Technology, brilliant and incredible technology, is used by the government to have supreme control over the words and actions of its citizens. Fear and ignorance are the driving force of everything. People who believe the lies of those in power because they fear the consequences of disobedience. Citizens who “vanish” because they utter words like “strike” and “garden” to close friends. People who believed themselves to be insignificant against the tide of power. But because of courage and love of family(yes, love people) that all changed...

Unclean Jobs for Women & Girls
by
Alissa Nutting
madeusbooks
, December 16, 2013
The one thing that struck me the most about this collection of short stories is the honesty displayed by the characters and the writing. Nothing is sugar coated and that is disturbingly delicious. Alissa Nutting put her characters in surreal and dark situations, but showed us the complexity and drive inside of them. At times I had to throw my hand over my mouth at what I read, stunned, but that moment allowed me to get past the unconventional and look deeper into the heart of the character. These stories will make you feel an overwhelming and odd combination of feelings. 'Models Assistant' will make you feel incredibly uncomfortable, 'Ice Melter' will leave you numb and aching and 'Knife Thrower' will tear any emotional resolve you have into little crumbs. I was not prepared for some of these stories. 'Dancing Rat' is probably the one that I will remember most of all. Each one of these carefully planned stories will leave you wanting, but for what I cannot tell you because, even now, I don’t know myself. All I do know is, I need more. I have never read anything or anyone like Alissa Nutting and that equally terrifies and excites me. It is a rarity in this world to find something that is written with such fearlessness. I can go on and talk about each story but I won’t. These little gems need to be discovered by your unprepared and stammering heart. I believe they will bring something different out of you than they did out of me and that is their real beauty. These stories were meant to be read, explored and felt, so, read on.
